About this deal

Long Shot spans over years and it gives the reader time to connect and invest themselves in Iris and August.

They have the conversation of a lifetime and at the moment he knew she would be his until he finds out that she is dating his longtime nemesis Caleb. Iris is a smart woman who is put in an impossible situation and does the best to deal with the hand she has been dealt. Wow, I was blown away with this story, not only does it awaken the awareness of domestic abuse but tells the story of two relationships, one that was destined to heal and one that had the potential to destroy. I had to put my kindle down a couple of times because of the powerful emotions this book was making me feel. Yet, again, this book showcases the important of found family and how important it is to cut out toxic family members from your life, because blood is just that; blood, and nothing more.

Kennedy Ryan’s writing grabbed hold of me from the beginning with a connection between Iris and August that spans years. It's about trusting oneself, learning to let go, growing up, and surviving a storm so wicked you don't know where you made the wrong turn in the rain.

Her hands map the muscles in my arms and chest, her eyes closed as if she’s reading my body by Braille. This book did open some wounds for me, the ones I left behind long ago, but it definitely strengthened my belief in women being the stronger sex, esp when they have their backs to the wall and their kids hiding behind them. There are some heavy themes that are dealt with, with such elegance and suspense that I really enjoyed this as a read and I was also really happy how the author portrayed all these thematic elements into one. As a reviewer, I like to think I make it pretty clear when something works for me and when something doesn't work for me. I told myself I was done a few times, but curiosity and a friend pushed me to pick up the book again, and again until I just couldn't.Although I had a few issues with the story at the beginning and further, some of the efforts put in to showcase the trope - I really enjoyed this and I will definitely be reading more of this author later! The story of August and Iris is heavy, it holds you on the guts and you cannot put the book down until you finish it. Iris is a strong independent young woman with a mother who used men her whole life to get what she wanted and Iris is determined to break the mould, determined to go through life being dependant on nobody. When August re-enters her life, the world seems briefly bright again, but Iris's darkest nights are not over yet. Sometimes the heart speaks in whispers, and by the time we hear, by the time we listen, it’s too late and we don’t know.
