I'm fond of YA genre novels and it was nice to read one set in London (albeit a vague unspecified 'South London'), with a diverse mixture of street-talking teenagers slogging their way through life at an academy school while trying to dodge gang life and shaming on social media.I understand that as a teen it can be frustrating when you feel like no adults will listen to you or take your side but the fact that Ilyas was shouting so loudly for help and no one was listening went beyond frustration and into the territory of annoyance. The social media brings this right into the moment, and emotions will be stirred by the treatment of some young women here. There were stereotypes that showed a lot about what happens within families but dealing with it and how to fight back. They learn to hide parts of themselves if it doesn’t match what they are taught about what makes them a “man”.
