With the Digic X processor on board, it’s fair to expect good things of the R5’s performance – and so it proved in our tests. The R5 uses a new version of Dual Pixel CMOS autofocus, which means focussing is done on the sensor itself. This allows you to manually choose from 5,940 different AF points across 100 per cent of the sensor’s horizontal dimension and 90 per cent of its vertical.

The EOS R5 is still substantial-feeling, with a deep grip that makes it easy and comfortable to hold, but it’s also easy to tote around without it feeling burdensome. Weather resistance is said to be up to the standard of Canon's 5D series, which professionals will tell you means the R5 should withstand troublesome weather better than some photographers. We’d be confident in most situations.

While it took me a while to adapt to the new mode selection method, I like this change. While it used to be simpler to switch between modes using the “PASM” dial the new mode dial is more versatile. For instance, you can restrict the modes available while switching, if you know that you are not going to use some of them. For instance, I turned off A+, Fv and P, as I never use them anyway. Actually, I mostly use M nowadays (thanks to on-screen histograms) and therefore hardly ever switch between modes anymore, so the slightly more cumbersome way of changing between modes doesn’t affect me in real life. A couple of times now, I've pulled my R5 out of my camera bag only to find the OEM battery that shipped with the camera body completely drained. I've found my R to show low voltage when I used my old dummy battery and power supply, but it works just the same. The ‘Battery info’ menu option has filtered down to enthusiast models and can now also be found on the EOS 750D and 760D cameras, introduced in February 2015. These were the first of the entry-level models to offer details of battery performance. They use the LP-E17 battery which includes same technology as the LP-E6N.

We re-tested the Canon EOS R5's video performance after the arrival of its 1.1.0 firmware update, which promised to "extend video shooting times in some situations". You can read the full results of our video tests here, but the short answer is that while it slightly improves recovery times in some modes and situations, it's not a radical change from the original figures quoted for the EOS R5.You can attach the protective cover in a different orientation to indicate whether the battery is charged or not. The 20.1MP resolution might seem a bit low for stills, but when combined with the 4K UHD video performance it’s a camera that should be able to comfortably put professional-looking multimedia content; after all, the EOS-1D X Mark III, Canon’s flagship DSLR, has an identical sensor. It also has potential advantages over the R5 in terms of workflow speed, low light performance and burst shooting stamina. The blue columns represent the gross usable power in the battery, which Canon won by about 10-15%. The orange columns represent the percentage of the battery’s power that is applicable to the higher-wattage mode allowing for 12 frames per second before the waning wattage fails over to a lesser framerate mode.
