About this deal

Read it because - The art is great, it has interesting facts about South Korea and its culture/history, lots of fights, a funny Italian character and Ken's eyebrows. Ambition Is Evil: Many of the characters we see have ambitions beyond just being cruel sadists, but in striving for their goals of wealth and power, they often become just that, IF they already weren't like that to being with. Aside from becoming more manly, almost any form of character development is a transparent attempt to fool the reader into thinking that this series is actually capable of plot twists. (rest assure, it isn't) Frankly I'm not sure if the author was tired of the series/actively disliked it and was trying to tank it or hired someone else to finish it or something, there is no excuse for that trash I just read.

So the main protagonist decides to confess his love to his classmate, Yumi. She rejected him, because she wants to go to South Korea to become a police officer. As he heard her dream, he decides to go after her, and with some incidents he happened to become a leader of a gang. The art is beautiful. Really, the environments and the (male) characters are drawn in great detail and variety. The fight-scenes are well drawn and the facial expressions and movement of the characters are great. The extra chapters where Boichi explains the inspiration behind certain elements are interesting and can be felt afterwards in the sceneries and portrayal of Korea. being very charismatic. But unfortunately the female characters do not have that same affection on the part of the author, only to be raped or to make scenes of fanservice having little depth, but at least Yumi having a good prominence in the end.

Statistics

Kae-Lyn and a Russian woman in chapter 96, much to their chagrin. They become unable to hurt each other due to sympathy upon realizing they both were trying to seduce their respective leaders, so they just rip each other's clothes off. Bleached Underpants: Subverted completely! The guy doesn't hide the fact that he did porn, even in a fan AMA, he said he'd like to work at it again! The women however, only appear is two varieties: Yumin clones and childlike Kae-Lyn clones that give you pedophile vibes. Neither is very well drawn with strange poses and weird proportions/anatomy. They are often drawn in the same poses with no body variety at all. There is also no shading in their faces to show any difference between the characters' features (whereas the male characters have this).

Protagonist Journey To Anti-Villain: Initially, Ken is okay with having a small gang that can pass as posers thinking way too big. As time goes on, Ken's influence actually creates a parallel state, he becomes a criminal big shot by owning corrupt Casinos, idol agencies and real estate companies. That's the point where where Ken starts doubting himself, being noticeably careless about rivals trying to destroy or seize his empire, as he thinks it could be for the best. Art Evolution: The art in the beginning volumes was pretty good to start with, but became incredibly polished as time went on.No Celebrities Were Harmed: Let's see, for starters, Ban-Phoung in his first appearance was based on Tony Jaa. Then on the Casino arc, we have one of the director's hitmen is a carbon copy of the great Charles Bronson. And in Wallman, the two male protagonists are dead ringers of George Clooney and Danny Devito. Don't Tell Mama: Played for comedic and dramatic effect as Ken tries to keep his role as one of the most powerful gang leaders in Korea a secret from his love interest, Yumi, who is a police officer working in the gang violence division. She also hates gangs because as the daughter to Japan's most powerful yakuza group, she lost her sister and mother to gang warfare. ACTION: The action is mediocre at the start, but when Boichi decided to write things better the action followed suit and became really quite good. Nothing outstanding but it isn't bad. That is, apart one of two fights with only women, which would be comical if it wasnt so badly written. Rape as Drama: Ken doesn't always manage to save the many women under threat of rape that he encounters, which leads to this trope. I have to say the personally this is one of my favourite manga's that I have read although sometimes I think they go over the top with ecchi.

Origin is set years after this story, in a Cyberpunk setting. An elderly Ken makes a brief appearance towards the end to provide resources to the protagonist. Art 10 - I genuinely do not believe words can define the magnificence of Boichi's art! The art is of the same caliber as Takehiko Inoue's Vagabond, Shin Ichi Sakamoto's Innocent, Tomo Takeuchi's Ballroom E Youkoso, or Kentaro Miura's Berserk. Body anatomy is superb, and the detail is unparalleled! Becoming the Mask: After the Idol group arc, both Yumi and Ken's friend in the cram house both comment on how he's changed/become more serious. Noticeably, Ken is hardly ever drawn in his less detailed, more comedic version after.

Alternative Titles

Expy: Ken is Vash The Stampede as a mafioso, he even shares his idealism, it's an interesting case, as both Boichi and Yasuhiro Nightow are friends, and Boichi drew Trigun: The Lost Plant, a one shot set 6 years after the ending of the original manga. CHARACTERS: I talked previously about them but basically, the main characters are good and enjoyable, the villains are dislikable yet sometimes understandable, and the women lose all personality when a man is involved. This manga is far from over but from what i have read so far all i can say is that it is amazing. Even though the plot is not the most original thing ever it is very engaging and addictive and this is due to several factors. The following is a more detailed review. Don't bother reading if you don't want a giant wall of text full of my opinions. It's basically so incredibly sexist that the escapism value disappears completely. There is no dignity for any female character in this story. None at all. Not even through the art quality.

This sounds interesting isn't it? What can go wrong? Well, the story and the action part of this manga is pretty good. There are a lot of beatiful panels, and the story leading is also good. It can be always exciting. Almost the best thing in this manga is this is a seinen. The problem is the manga is trying to be very cool, and this has an impact of the action scenes, and some other more. The characters suddenly changes personality, and having unpredictable nature wich would be okay, if this would be once or twice in the whole series even without any racional explanation, but the writer do this every time. This is usually because the gang is just a status symbol. We just see how they raid buildings and after that we can read informations about the band's status, but we never see them. I didn't get what I expect to get. I thought this was gonna be an empire builder-like manga just like the overlord, but as I wrote before, the band is just a cover name for making a protagonist to symbolize a king of the underworld, whose to face you can only kneeling before him. Not gonna lie, these looks pretty awesome, but apart from that, this has no other function. It's like the One Piece crew, but the leader has more prestige... If this series was a hentai I wouldn't have bothered with this review, but the fact that it tries not to be is what makes it so bad. Beauty Is Never Tarnished: Averted hardcore with what physically happens to Miss Yoo, but ultimately played with, as part of what Ken teaches Miss Yoo is that no one can defile another human being, and therefore she should never consider herself as defiled/tarnished. Ever wanted to be a gang leader? Well, Ken Kitano never wanted to become one, but meh... he did. Let teh comedy ensue.Defeat Means Friendship: Ken employs many of his past opponents into his gang, knowing they were good people who happened to work for his enemies. This is, however, completely averted in his stand against the White Dragon Clan. He and his allies kill everyone they can, with Ken later stating he finds them unredeemable. This dark turn of events highlighted when Ken seemingly kills a guy who was a misguided fool manipulated by a false friend... until it turns out Ken did spare him after all. Karma Houdini: Yan Taeshin, the manager Ken works with when he briefly works at an idol agency. See Easily Forgiven.
