What We Fund

Some research has found that moms-to-be pregnant with sons are more likely to develop gestational diabetes— a pregnancy condition characterized by higher-than-normal glucose in the blood — than expectant moms who are pregnant with daughters.

What happens during fetal heart monitoring?

Conventional wisdom holds that if the baby’s heart rate is less than 140 beats per minute, you’re having a boy; if it’s more than 140 beats per minute, you’re having a girl. It's too early in your pregnancy. Your due date may be off. (This can happen, especially if your menstrual cycle was irregular.) Your provider will schedule another visit in a week or two. The most common time when couples find out the sex of their babies is between weeks 18 and 20. Many doctors perform an anatomy scan around this point in pregnancy to examine your baby’s features and inner workings from head to toe. Blood tests called cell-free DNA tests have cropped up over the last several years. You can get one as early as around week 9 in your pregnancy. The main goal of these tests is not to determine the sex of your child. Instead, they screen for possible genetic abnormalities. Your child’s sex chromosomes are among all that other genetic information. The monitor records your baby’s heartbeat as a pattern on a strip of paper. This is sometimes called a ‘trace’ or a ‘CTG’.

You'll be offered an ultrasound scan if they have any concerns about how your baby is growing and developing. This could be because of domestic abuse or violence, sexual abuse or female genital mutilation. While you shouldn't take the following findings to heart — they're still just for fun, and even the predictions that have been studied often tilt only ever so slightly toward one sex or the other —they may make the game of odds slightly more accurate. Beat baby always starts off with me and I begin the rhyme and at the end of the first verse I pass beat baby to the first child and ask them to supply a suitable word for the 'blank'. Then when that verse is done, the child passes beat baby on to the next child and so it goes on until everyone has had a turn. The normal range for the rate of the baby’s heartbeat is between 110 and 160 beats a minute, although this can be higher or lower without meaning that the baby is in difficulty. The variation in the baby’s heart rate may be caused by the womb contracting, which affects the blood flow to the placenta (afterbirth). This is normal and most babies cope without any difficulty. Researchers say that the more disgust toward foods a pregnant woman feels, the likelier it is she’s pregnant with a boy.Sometimes your midwife or doctor may recommend continuous monitoring – a CTG. This may be for a number of reasons relating to your baby’s health. Your midwife or doctor will explain the reasons why they recommend using continuous monitoring. Nipple color. Darker nipples mean you’re having a boy, the legend goes. But in fact, pregnancy hormones cause most women’s nipples to darken (and maybe also become more tender), whether they’re having a boy or a girl.
