Standard mesh: 1.3-1.4mm. Good for insects such as cabbage root fly, onion fly, bean seed fly and carrot fly, as well as moth and butterfly pests. Birds and mammalscanalso be excluded. Although theoretically capable of penetrating mesh, mammals and larger birds seldom do, so there is rarely any need to add further protection such as bird netting. However, this size isunreliable in excluding small insects such as aphids, flea beetle, allium leaf miner and leek moth. Once the queen has built the nest eggs are laid in each hexagonal cell. These eggs turn to the larva in a few days and eventually pupate into adults. It can take up to 48 days for adult wasps to emerge. Everyone's situation is different, and indeed, an especially large nest could cause alarm, especially where there are pets and young children. Good quality standard meshes are manufactured from polythene and the holes will be about 1.3mm wide. Fine meshes will have holes about 0.8mm wide. Newer types of mesh netting can include optical additives such as aluminum strips for light reflection. Insect netting allows for increased airflow compared to plastic while still protecting plants. When using insect netting as a row cover, water from rain and overhead sprinklers is still able to reach plants. PREVENT THRIPS FROM PENETRATING THE NETTING

Fence panels, sheds, gates and wooden window frames are all ideal places for wasps to nest. In fact, if you notice small white lines on fence panels or sheds, it’s quite probably a sign that a wasp nest is not far away. Building the nest When building aerial nests, wasps commonly build their nests in trees, hanging from tree branches or the eaves of buildings. Wasp nests usually look like papery grey balloons, and often have an intricate swirly pattern on the outside, with cells visible from the bottom.
