About this deal

Many wheelset makers sell wheels with the option to choose different freehub standards though, so if you know what type of cassette you plan to use, you can buy a compatible wheelset. The left side of the axle is fitted with a hex hole. Use a 6mm hex wrench to hold the axle. Loosen the axle nut on the right side using a 17mm wrench.

Ratchets might seem the obvious choice for high-stress applications, but if the angle of engagement is the priority, an offset pawl system may be better. Industry Nine uses six offset pawls in its Hydra freehubs which, combined with a 115-tooth drive ring, produce a huge 690 points of engagement, giving an angle of engagement of just over half a degree. Rumours that Red Bull Hardline will become a series have been roaming the internet corridors a while, so it's perhaps no surprise to have the official news: Hardline will have...A ratchet design uses a pair of inter-connecting rings with teeth on their inner faces. James Huang / Immediate Media Install one gear inside freehub with smooth side facing freehub, and toothed side facing hub shell. If there is no play in freehub bearings, they either move or they see load, never both at the same time. Thus if you keep the thing well lubricated, and the water out, the freehub should last almost indefinitely. Ones I have set-up (as I have suggested) have invariably given no trouble whatsoever, even at very high mileage. Hi 5 8 5, I wonder how similar RnR Red Devil and Super Web grease are. I have some RnR Super Web grease and I also have some Belray Waterproof grease. I prefer using Dumonde Tech Freehub oil and their grease, but there are many acceptable substitutes as long as you understand what you are substituting.

I prefer a lighter lubricant during colder months and a little heavier lubricant in the heat of summer. Dumonde Tech makes a freehub light oil and a grease. You can also use Dumonde Tech Liquid Grease. Shimano and Mavic also make freehub lubes. One of my favorites that is no longer available is Paul Morningstar's Electric Lube which is more of a very light grease. Within each, there are lots of variations in how they’re engineered and there are some well-known specialist designs such as Chris King hubs. However, I guess your freehub may vary. Also I see some of the newer freehub bodies have fixed rear rubber seals, which is a pain.Has kept the Campag Khamsin hubs happy on my commuter bike which sees a lot of rain. Has muffled the characteristic Campag freehub sound, but all I care about is keeping the hub internals clean, dry and smooth running. Used, endorsed and/or recommended by: Crank Brothers, Boyd Cycling, Ritchey Design and Paul Components. Campagnolo North America recommends our Freehub Grease as an alternative to their lb-100 Grease as it is no longer available in North America. Our Freehub Grease is a proven replacement for any hub or wheel companies grease. Fundamentally what you are doing is lubing the rollers within the chain. The exterior of the chain could be totally free of any lube and work perfectly if the rollers themselves were lubed. It is somewhat impossible to achieve this with conventional chain lube but the point is there is no point to having any extra lube on the outside of the chain. It only attracts dirt and grit which add friction and promote wear, so the least amount possible is the goal. I've noticed my freehub has gotten quite a bit louder over the last few months. Several people have recommended that I lubricate the freewheel by tipping the bike on its side and dripping lubricant into the freewheel. However, I've gotten differing opinions on what to use for a lubricant. the axle tightens from one end. Here is no internal spacer between left and right side bearings to support the inner races

Freewheel (old technology) or freehub (current technology)? People tend to use the terms interchangeably, but they are quite different. Our Classic Freehub Grease is specifically designed for all freehubs that require a light weight grease. These style hubs we like to call the more mechanical hubs. Unlike the simpler, fewer parts of the Pawl style hubs. Dumonde Tech Freehub Grease performs in a broad temperature range from the heat of summer, to the frigid temperatures of the north. “Pour Point” of Freehub Grease is -30 degrees. The chain and cogs were squeaky clean and grease free but so was the freehub eventually.................. I’m guessing One Pivot makes the assumption that everyone knows, or should know what NLGI is, by his not defining what that acronym is. It’s the National Lubricating Grease Institute and they have defined some industry standards that most mere mortals are unaware of, or couldn’t give a sh!t about. Lazy design. probably meant to justify a more expensive hub with an inner spacer in and a drive ring with a few more points.

What is a freehub?

Hi BobDopolina, ahh, so there's not one grease that does it all, in this area ... lets say sealed bearing hubs, sealed bearing freehubs with or without a needle bearing, and quiet or louder ratchet sound is ok (such as the Novatec hubs/freehubs that you sell) ... Yes, absolutely. I’d say there are special lubes I still don’t know about. There really are so many specific and nuanced products out there and they exist, for the most part, for a reason. Sometimes, products from other industries perform as well or better than things commonly found in the bike shop, too. Marine-grade greases are a good example of this. Anti-seize is in fact basically derived from automotive or more industrial applications. Brucey wrote:It is important to distinguish between shimano style freehub bodies and the others, where the freewheel body rotates on the axle using its own set of bearings, which is what I presume you have. I'm a bit confused. This article says not to use grease, but the instructional article for the freehub maintenance says to use Mobil XHP-222 grease (please see below). Which one is true?

I just had to service my freehub for a BHS SL210 rear hub. I ended up having to take it to the LBS to get some grease/lube for it. I only have Phil Wood grease and it's so think I didn't think it would be appropriate to use. I was thinking of trying Belray Waterproof grease because of its Washout and other properties (it is excellent on bearings)Pull freehub to remove. Use care not to loose small parts. Note orientation of pawls as you remove freehub. One or both of the ratchet rings can slip in and out on the freehub on splines machined into their outer edges, which mesh with teeth in the freehub and/or hub body. Freehub bodies have splines that allow for cassettes to be properly aligned to the wheel. Gary Walker / Our Media Loosen threaded pinch nut on left side of axle. Unthread and remove this nut after loosening screw that hold pinch nut.
