About this deal

Extras are somewhat sparse but uniformly interesting. Here’s a breakdown of what you’ll find on each disc. (Note that the same trailers for Mysteries, Pastorale 1943, and Julia are repeated on each disc. A trailer for Playing with Fire is absent from the collection.)

First of all, the good news is that the frame skip with Jean in the club appears lessened from the previous master. The other, later one with Emmanuelle and Ariane at the sports club has been eliminated, possibly by cutting away a moment earlier. Finally comes one of Kristel’s more well-known works; 1974’s Julia, a German sex comedy/drama. Much like the first film in this collection, Julia is a study in perversion, though much less extreme. Pauli (Ekkehardt Belle) takes a trip to join his father for a summer retreat away from boarding school. There he meets a long-time friend and object of his lust, Julia (Sylvia Kristel). The two make moves towards lovemaking when they are interrupted by another male friend whose moves end up much more explicit than Pauli’s. Little Joe" plays Sigimond Pons, a man who seemingly has it all: a successful career, a gorgeous wife, an adorable son, and a beautiful home with live-in help. He and his wife vow never to betray each other but there's trouble in paradise as soon as his boss sends him to Paris for a week. Once there, Siggie's dark side emerges and he begins leaving his hotel at night to prowl the city's red light district looking for ...something. Pastorale 1943 is the set’s most conventional film, a two-hour war drama about Dutch resistance to Nazi occupation. It’s a well-constructed meditation on civilian life during wartime, though Kristel, regrettably, appears in only a handful of short scenes. While she plays a pivotal character, her brief appearance in the film plays more like a grab for funding and international attention. Similarly, the inimitable Rutger Hauer appears during the last four minutes—a wasted opportunity indeed. PASTORALE 1943 (Netherlands, 1978) Wim Verstappen. Bonus features: 2K Transfer, Audio Commentary by Peter Verstraten, Vintage Interviews 1978 HD, Theatrical HD Trailers and more tba.The set’s two Dutch films are co-starring Rutger Hauer, and Sylvia at the peak of her career. Submitted for the 1978 Academy Awards — Best Foreign Film, Wim Verstappen’s PASTORALE 1943 is a war drama centered on the Dutch resistance during World War II, and also features the debut of Renée Soutendijk. Painter turned director Paul de Lussanet’s romantic psychological drama MYSTERIES, based on the world famous novel by the Norwegian nobel prize winner Knut Hamsun and shot by renowned cinematographer Robby Müller, also stars Rita Tushingham and David Rappaport. Starring – Frederik de Groot (The Little Riders, Star Cops), Leen Jongewaard (My Blue Heaven, Looking for Eileen), and Coen Flink (The Bluffers, Flanagan)

To all collectors, especially those on a limited budget: Cult Epics doesn't care about customers and won't accept responsibility for defective items. There has also been complete and total misunderstanding of the ending by the other reviewers. The magic of this movie is in the PROCESS not the outcome. I'll tell you right now that as in most Euro-Romance novels, there is no happy ending -- and that's a double entendre. Diana flees from her last session with Sigimond in mid-fellatio because she's realized that she's fallen in love with him and is frightened he'll notice by the change in her sex-making. Later Sigimond shoots himself because the feelings he's developed for Diana made him feel unfaithful to Sergine's memory. Playing with Fire: Feature audio commentary by Tim Lucas; Interview with Catherine Robbe-Grillet (5 minutes); Mysteries trailer; Pastorale 1943 trailer; Julia trailer; Poster and stills gallery

In the HD master of the Theatrical Version, there is a small jump cut in the last few frames of a shot. For the DC, the shot was simply stopped a moment earlier immediately before this jump cut. The set’s two Dutch films are co-starring Rutger Hauer, and Sylvia at the peak of her career. She survived to work again, directing a short animated film, Topor and Me (2004), which won an award at the Tribeca film festival in 2006. Two years ago, I attended the Pula festival in Croatia where she was invited for the showing of Two Sunny Days, a Croatian film in English, directed by Ognjen Svilicic, in which she appeared in a small but important role. I had the pleasure of sharing a car with her on a two-hour drive to Zagreb, during which she chatted cheerfully about her career. Pastoral 1943 is an intriguing WWII drama released in 1978 about the German occupation of The Netherlands. Kristel is Miep Algera, an English teacher at the school where the main character, Johan Schults (Frederik de Groot), also works. She is shunned by her peers and neighbors because of her romantic association with a German officer. Academy Awards — Best Foreign Film, Wim Verstappen's Pastorale 1943 is a war drama centered on the Dutch resistance during World War II, and features also the debut of Renée Soutendijk.

Next is Mysteries, a Dutch translation of a popular Swedish novel. Fans of period romance will find great interest in this film. It is slow and absolutely dated, but this late-Victorian era tale is beautiful from start to finish. The nature on display is stunning and realistic, the staging is dynamic and interesting, and the plot itself is intriguing. The set's two Dutch films are co-starring Rutger Hauer, and Sylvia at the peak of her career. Submitted for the 1978 Finally, a little picture comparison. The old HD scan of the Theatrical Version was a bit more colorful. However, the 4K Blu-ray comes with HDR and thus the additional color gradations cannot be duly represented here. The UHD release of the Director's Cut clearly has the best overall picture quality. Cult Epics knows its audience, as evidenced by the boutique label’s more thirty years of success in the home video marketplace. Founded in Amsterdam, the label has always remained loyal to its Dutch origins, and the Kristel 1970s Collection, released as a numbered, limited edition box set, is arguably the label’s most on-brand release to date.Mysteries: Feature audio commentary by Peter W. Verstraten; Feature audio commentary by Jeremy Richey; Interview with the cast and director (6 minutes); Poster and photo gallery; Mysteries trailer; Pastorale 1943 trailer; Julia trailer
