About this deal

Drink it as a whiskey-like spirit and it’s enjoyable. But just don’t drink this expecting it to taste like what you think of as beer. And that’s about it. It’s harsh and it burns, but at one time it was the strongest beer in the world. And that’s about the only reason you’d choose to drink it. The elderflower adds a delicate, floral flavour, while the pilsner cuts through the sweetness to add crispness, pleasing those with less of a sweet tooth. It’s juicy, thirst-quenching and only 2.5% ABV, so ideal for those summer afternoon drinks. Another of the famously strong beers, and at 45% ABV, it’s still stronger than most whiskies. The nose suggests countryside fruits, and there’s also some sweetness mixed in, something like molasses or treacle.

By this point, the ABV of 15% is hardly even an issue and is just one part of a rich mix of elements that combine to make an extremely satisfying if potent brew. Despite the resurgence of traditional British ales and the rise of British craft brewing, lager remains the undisputed sales champion in Britain. The British beer market is still dominated by international beer brands such as Budweiser, Heineken, Carlsberg, Stella Artois, and Guinness. You can find these at nearly every pub, supermarket, or bottle shop, along with a wide selection of British brands. This “beer” is agreeable to drink, unlike many of the other super-strength offerings, although it’s still more akin to drinking a whiskey or a brandy than a pint of lager. Those were more innocent days though, and the Tactical Nuclear Penguin registered an ABV of “only” 32% – but that was still high enough to make it arguably the strongest beer ever brewed at the time. If you want to try a strong, strong beer that also holds its own in terms of flavor and complexity, this one should be high on your list of priorities. With the Samuel Adams Utopias, we are almost – but not quite – approaching beers that can genuinely be considered beers. We love the name of this beer – because it’s probably what you might think when you wake up after overindulging in this powerful American imperial stout. With this tasty yet potent brew, it would be easy to do that though. An English style that evolved in the 18th century when pale-colored malts became available due to new malting techniques. These beers became increasingly popular with British beer drinkers latching on to the term bitter to refer to the sharper and hoppier versions that contrasted with the more mild variations. They tend to be golden or copper in color and range from 3–4% (standard bitter) to 5–6% (extra special bitter).

This is a brewery that knows how to make potent beers that taste fantastic – and this is another perfect example of their craft.Another version of the Deal with the Devil beer from Anchorage brewing, this is a double oak-aged iteration with just a touch less alcohol. At least that much alcohol in a beer would be describable as “whopping” if we hadn’t already seen a slew of beers well over 50-60% ABV!

It’s dark in color, sweet and fruity in the nose and delivering chocolate, maple and coffee notes when you sip. There’s also a strong hint of bourbon that lingers in the mouth well after you swallow. As a non-alcoholic pale ale, Ilkley Brewery’s Virgin Mary pulls off some pretty impressive feats. First, it has a lovely orange aroma, even though it doesn’t contain any citrus. Second, it actually tastes like beer, despite coming in at only 0.5% ABV. The race to produce the strongest beer has been running for quite some time, with breweries all over the world clamoring to win the strongest brew accolade. Special techniques like re-pitching with Champagne yeast or freeze-distilling mean that beer has long ago transcended its average realms of 4.5%-5%. In 1994, the strongest beer listed by the Guinness Book of Records was a beer called Vetter that was just 10.5%. By 2011, the strongest beer was BrewDog’s Ghost Beer at 28%. Orkney Skullsplitter: an 8.5% scotch ale with a fruity character, and hints of spicy hop, dates and figs.

The strongest beer from the well-regarded Anchorage Brewing Company is their Deal with the Devil, an American barleywine brewed with galaxy hops. I’d buy dark Belgian ales with their rich, raisiny tones. There were rich and chocolatey stouts. IPAs that seemed to smell like a fresh fruit salad. I’d pour the beer into a fancy glass and contemplate it instead of just quaffing it, wowed by what I was tasting. Things got even more interesting when I started thinking about what I’d eat with those beers. I loved the idea that I could have fun with it. I didn’t need to be making a fancy meal – often my mission was just finding the perfect beer for fish fingers and chips. Or perhaps I’d want to know the ideal chocolate biscuit or type of cheese for whatever beer I had (call me obsessive, but I did also spend hours cooking dinners specifically for certain beers…). Beer and food pairing Whilst Snake Venom and Brewmeister have claimed the top two spots, there are some other beers that deserve a mention in the race to create the world’s strongest beer. These are: Today, British beer drinkers are spoiled for choice; high-volume convenience beers rub shoulders with real ales and craft brews across a range of pubs and stores. This selection may be made up of a mix of 500ml, 330ml 440ml cans and bottles to make sure you have the widest variety of breweries and beer styles.
