About this deal

Jon realizes that it's possible for our madness to be a force for good when he meets America's real-life superheroes or a force for evil when he meets the Reverend 'Death' George Exoo, who has dubiously assisted in more than a hundred mercy killings. Portions of this book have appeared previously, in slightly different form, in Out of the Ordinary, What I Do, the Guardian and GQ (USA). For Channel 4, Jon has made a number of films including the five-part series Secret Rulers of the World and Tottenham Ayatollah. I imagine it would be a good read- if you had not read his other books, if you have I would't waste your money. and so many more highly interesting people and stories that time and space do not allow me to describe.

Ronson also goes on a cruise to meet psychic Sylvia Browne, a woman who goes on TV to tell parents of missing children (often incorrectly) their kids are dead, and finds out, surprise surprise, she’s not just a fake but an unpleasant old bag as well. The only one I'd read before was his cruise with Sylvia Browne, the psychic who specialized in feeding false and harmful information to grieving parents. Perhaps it is this willingness to believe or at least try to believe that means he gets to know some of life's stranger characters. His opening piece on the revelation that the hip-hop duo Insane Clown Posse has secretly been hardcore Christian all these years was a small piece of essay perfection.

Ronson is a character himself his pieces, a highly neurotic, cynical one, but also one who also brings the perfect blend of insight and wryness to his personally felt observations. Ronson asks at least half a dozen times in the chapter why the victims didn't refuse to see King after the assaults, or as Ronson puts it: "why [they] continually went back for more". Most of the focuses in this book could have entire books dedicated to them anyhow- so I think it's fairly measured to say that there could have been a bit of an expansion on a lot of the subjects. His ability to self-appraise, and layer the narration with his observations and reflections, are fascinating in their honesty. Lost at Sea: The Jon Ronson Mysteries is a 2012 book by Jon Ronson which highlights and further elaborates many of Ronson's magazine articles.

A third talks about "Indigo Children", AKA kids affected with ADD whose parents are convinced that they are advanced spiritual beings. He's met a man who tried to split the atom in his kitchen and another who's preparing to welcome the aliens to earth. He has the ability to ask questions people don't normally ask, and root out surprising responses or telling evasions. The would-be killers, like all students in North Pole high school, answered letters from children all over the world addressed to “Santa, North Pole” under elfish pseudonyms.
