About this deal

This will be more effective than aeration but still has its limits because the water still may have nowhere to go when it has gone through the top layer of sandy soil. Land drains in gardens are usually drained to a central point and this is usually a soakaway. A soakaway is simply a hole in the ground filled with rubble and coarse stone with a drainage pipe laid to it removing surface (rain) water from other areas. The soil in which the soakaway is placed must be granular with good drainage properties. It is pointless sinking a soakaway in clay unless there is a more porous layer underneath. The diagram below is not to scale. Your garden is located at the bottom of a slope or hill and receives high amounts of surface runoff water.

Fill the top of the trench with soil or add decorative stone at the top to make it level with the yard. Excavation of the trenches should ensure that any turf is cut carefully and stored to be re-laid later. Dig the trenches three times the width of the pipe to the required gentle fall to get the water to the soakaway or outlet. It’s very likely that you will recognise a soggy garden when you see one. Some of the symptoms include multiple puddles caused by rain that have trouble draining, squelching sounds upon stepping on the soil, reed or similar plants growing in the lawn, and the presence of moss. 10 factors that can lead to poor drainageOf course, you don’t have to turn your drainage project into a creek bed. A simple swale is an effective and subtle way to control surface water. Obviously, it’s easier to create a swale before you seed or sod your yard, but if necessary, you can cut out the grass with a sod cutter and replace it when you’re done regrading. Elevating the whole garden via raised beds or with an additional layer of gravel and topsoil. This MAY work but, since the water won’t be going anywhere, you yet again risk shifting the problem to another area as with the topsoil method above.

With garden drainage as a growing issue in the UK there is no better time to get it fixed than now. It’s a good idea to do thorough research before setting out on any DIY garden drainage improvements because bad drainage is the same as no drainage. The size of your lawn (or the area you would like to be drained) affects the size of pipe you will need. Choosing the right size is a delicate balance; too small a diameter and the drainage problem won't be fixed; too large and grass won't have enough water to grow. Laying a smaller diameter in a herringbone layout is much more effective than just switching to a larger diameter. Start by making a swale-essentially a gentle, shallow drainage ditch. Then line it with gravel or stones and add interest with boulders, a bridge or plantings. With a land drain there is a certain amount of flexibility in so much as the pipe level can be adjusted by some of the bedding.

Install a French Drain

Structures like swimming pools, home extensions you or neighbours have added can all cause gardens to This is important if you are planning on aerating your lawn - the pipe must be deep enough so it's not damaged by spiking or other maintenance. You can adjust the depth of the drainage layer to suit the soil type and local watertable. Trenches deeper than 1.2m must be shored to prevent instability and collapse. Most drainage projects are not cheap. Before looking into any garden drainage ideas, we highly encourage you to confirm that your green space indeed has trouble draining water. An exterior footing drain requires excavating 4 to 6+ feet down to the footings and exposing the foundation walls. A waterproofing coating or membrane is applied to the foundation walls. Then, an exterior French drain with perforated PVC pipe is installed next to the foundation footing, and the excavation is filled with drainage gravel. Perhaps the best option available is to redirect the water to a surface water drain. These are the drains which catch the rain water coming off the roof. Their capacity is very high and will likely act as a permanent solution to very bad drainage issues.
