About this deal

Teenagers and their parents will find much to fascinate them in this updated edition of Nicola Morgan’s skilful, non-scientists explanation of the complex and specific science that makes teenagehood such a specific period of growing up. Her most recent novel, Wasted , won several awards, including the Scottish Children’s Book Award (older readers) and was longlisted for the Carnegie Medal.

But the topic of gender or sex (which are not the same things) has in recent years become one where views are often polarised and we have to be clearer what we mean.

Nicola lives in Northamptonshire; she is a former Chair of the Society of Authors in Scotland and is currently an Ambassador for Dyslexia Scotland. I only wish that this book had been around when dealing with my own teenager's antisocial behaviour. While the generalisations are fascinating, and the basic biology explained well, it is not written by a scientist and a lot of the assessments are very simplistic.

Highly recommended for parents of teenagers wondering why they can never seem to say ANYTHING right. The information was presented in a really nice easy to read way and I think the stories that are presented also help to make it a more interesting read and help to put it into real life perspective rather than just facts on a page. Contrary to popular (parental) opinion, teenagers are not the lazy, unpleasant - frankly, spotty - louts they occasionally appear to be. If you’re interested in learning about your brain and you actually enjoy science, then this is the book for you. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.

As an adult I found it all a bit cheesy and (as per above) containing little new, but it is then useful to read in parallel with your teenager(s). TES It is very rare that an author succeeds in writing a book for teenagers which is also a 'must read' for their parents and teachers. She has written nearly 100 books, including novels such as Fleshmarket (currently being adapted for the London stage) and Mondays are Red, but in the last twelve years she has become increasingly well known for her passionate factual work on adolescence, with Blame My Brain - The Amazing Teenage Brain Revealed and The Teenage Guide to Stress being seminal titles for teenagers and the adults who work with and care about them. Reading about what goes on in an adolescent's brain can make all the difference to a teacher or parent who deals with the fallout of it each day.All the reviews in this archive were written by members of the Scattered Authors Society , sharing thoughts and enthusiasms about books and reading and based on their long experience of working with children and visiting schools and libraries .
