About this deal

Redshift suggests that riders up to 80kg should only use the main spring and those from 90kg to 110kg must install the inner spring as well. With the main spring fitted, my unit weighed 538g. If your bike has rear suspension, your saddle is already suspended so you do not need a suspension seatpost. This is simply due to the higher percentage of weight on your saddle. Conversely, if you have more weight on your hands because you ride in a more sporty position, you can get away with less suspension travel. Best Suspension Seatposts Coil Sprung The small unweighted saddle height increase needs a slight adjustment when mounting up for the first time. At the suggested preload setting, I immediately felt neutrally suspended and didn’t notice any negative effect on seated pedalling.

I appreciate you said that it takes a positive action to alter/swing the saddle position, but is there any hint of a suspension effect? There must be a small amount of give? For my riding style, I’d love to be able to slide the saddle forward just a couple millimeters more than I can with the current seat head. For most riders, this won’t be an issue, but I prefer a more forward saddle position. Saddle choice can help here, but ideally the seat head would allow for more forward adjustment. The Verdict… for now Alternate method: Use a fabric or paper measuring tape (or print one at https://printable-ruler.net/ ) and measure the circumference of the handlebar right next to your existing stem. You can measure the length of your existing stem as shown in the following picture. The length is measured from the center of the handlebar to the center of the steerer tube. Since ultra-distance bike races have no such rules, why wouldn’t ultra-distance cyclists want to have a seatpost that puts the saddle as far forward as possible all the time? The reason is that ultra-distance road cyclists tend to use drop handlebars with aerobars mounted to them and frequently switch between the positions.

However, would you recommend the Redshift post to be used on a roadbike? I ride lots of hills from 5-15% on decent and on broken tarmac. Deflection is the total movement that a seatpost will move after an impact. A seatpost with more deflection will reduce the fatigue on your body as it protects you from harder jolts like unexpected potholes or dirt road corrugations. It’ll also allow you to keep pedalling through particularly bumpy terrain. A single 5mm Allen bolt secures the two halves together, and in addition to securing both sides of the seatpost, this bolt is responsible for saddle tilt adjustments. A suspension seatpost is a great comfort upgrade, as it will both absorb bigger hits, as well as dampen vibrations coming up from the road. This essentially means you’ll feel fresher at the end of a long ride. The clear and concise instructions suggest positioning the saddle 5mm further forward and 6mm higher than with a rigid post to account for the initial sag when sitting. Along with the suggested spring force setting, made by turning a threaded plug in the bottom of the post to compress the internal spring, this proved accurate to the point where no further adjustment was needed.
