About this deal

In fact, when you stop to think about it - This new Echo Meter Touch is really in a league of it's own. I'm not sure, if typical FD/Het detectors should even be mentioned in the same paragraph! The book covers topics such as the properties of sound; how bats use sound; bat detection methods; recording devices; analysis software; recording techniques and call analysis. For each species found in the British Isles, information is given on distribution; emergence times; flight and foraging behaviour; habitat; and echolocation including parameters for common measurements. Calls are described in the context of the different technologies used (heterodyne, frequency division and time expansion). Various spectrograms are displayed for each species using examples from both BatSound and AnaLook. An echolocation key is included with the book.

The SMX-US mic is standard with the SM2, and is rated at 15kHz to 160kHz, whereas the SMX-UT mic is rated at 15kHz to 192kHz, and provides a flatter frequency response and higher sensitivity at frequencies above 60kHz, thereby capturing all necessary details in a bat call. We plan to further test and compare the EMT2 and EMT2 Pro for a future post. On this occasion we only tested the EMT2 – but the set up and use is fundamentally similar for both models. How we tested This product is also good for someone who prefers a bat detector, which has the ability to constantly improve. This is accomplished, via The EM Touch Software -and- Firmware updates. These will be released regularly, from Wildlife Acoustics. Knowledge of bat echolocation, calls and identification using bat detectors and programs such as BatSound has grown significantly in the last decade. In this practical guide Jon Russ and contributors (Kate Barlow, Philip Briggs & Sandie Sowler) present the latest data in a clear and concise manner. These devices are currently compatible with Echo Meter Touch 2 and Echo Meter Touch 2 Pro when running Android versions 8 or higher. Devices on this list (especially older ones) may not work with future versions of the Echo Meter Touch or may become incompatible with the current Echo Meter Touch 2 due to changes in the Android operating system. If a device is not listed, that means that we do not yet have enough information to know if it works correctly with the Echo Meter Touch 2 or not (including many that are running Android 8 or later). Newer devices (i.e. released within the last two years or so) are much more likely to work than older ones.

The following, are conclusions which I've reached, after using The Echo Meter Touch (with iPad mini Retina) for almost a month now. Are you a beginner to bat detecting or looking for a detector for your students? Why not take a look at the Echo Meter Touch 2?

The full-colour spectrogram is incredibly detailed and easy to view. You can scroll through call data with a swipe of your finger. Pinch and zoom the spectrograms for different views while you continue to monitor and record. Listen to sample recordings. Overall the Touch is an awesome piece of kit and no doubt Wildlife Acoustics are already planning or working on upgrades to make it even better! If your phone or tablet is GPS enabled, the Echo Meter Touch 2 records GPS data for each recording and embeds it in the metadata for that file. In the app you can look at a GPS view to see where all your recordings were made and follow the path you used between recordings! The GPS view of bat recordings I’ve made around my house. For a hand-held unit with pretty much everything you could want, the Echo Meter Touch 2 is hard to beat and excellent value for money. Even if you add the price of an Android tablet, the total price is probably less than you think (see below). Bats use ultrasonic calls both to detect their surroundings and to communicate with eachother. These sounds are too high to be heard by the unaided human ear. The EM Touch uses a special microphone combined with software to transform this sound into a frequency that is audible. You can listen either through the speaker of your phone/tablet or using earphones. You can also view the bat call as a sonogram whichis a visual representation of the sound. With some experience, you will learn how to recognise the different species based on the shapeof their sonograms. The updated Echo Meter Touch app for Android features pro-only options including adjustable gain and advanced trigger settings – and of course, the latest Kaleidoscope Pro auto-ID classifiers for bats species in North America, the UK, Europe, the Neotropics and South Africa. Make sure that if you are using an iPad mini that it has a retina display (I had to get a new iPad as Arbtech issues non-retina display iPads to team members as standard).

For the enthusiast, the cost of a compatible Apple device and the Touch might be prohibitive. But for the professional bat worker I’d say it’s a no brainer. This review was for the original Echo Meter Touch, which has been improved on for the Echo Meter Touch 2, which is slightly better and much more affordable than the original. If you already have a compatible Android device, it's a no-brainer, but even if you haven't it's well worth considering - compatibility list below. The Echo Meter Touch app for Android features pro-only options including adjustable gain and advanced trigger settings – and of course, the latest Kaleidoscope Pro auto-ID classifiers for bats species in North America, Europe, the Neotropics and South Africa. I will confess, right at the start - Even I made a few (minor) assumptions, prior to having access to the User Manual and receiving the equipment for test. Read on...and all will be made clear.

Please note: NOT compatible with Android versions earlier than 5.0 - Android compatibility information can be found HERE. Files are saved in WAV format onto the external micro SD card along with other useful data including temperature, humidity, light levels and GUANO metadata. An upgraded menu system with preset recording profiles for different survey applications, as well as the ability to build custom ones, makes the M2 a reliable and initiative option for bat work. For more details, see our dedicated blog post, where we tested this bat detector in the field. Echo Meter Touch 2 Pro I presume the device being suggested for comparison, in this case, must be the new AnaBat Express. Since, it is the lowest-cost system that AnaBat currently offers. It has been touted as a competitively-priced bat detecting solution. However:
