I’m not normally a horror fan, but the synopsis for this caught my eye, and I decided to take a chance on the book. it's a novel written in verse which is one of my favourite things to read - but I was completely blown away by this book.

I won’t get into any specifics but if you have a child that acts the way Hannah does, I was shocked at the lack of common sense by both Suzette and Alex. As a mother myself the thought of a child with psychological issues strong enough to want to harm their mother is downright scary. I didn't feel like I'd stumbled across anything that I would take with me for more than 4 minutes after I turned the final page of that book. And I believe sometimes it is hard not to judge in this situation, but I am a firm believer that unless you have walked in somebody’s shoes you really have no idea what is going on in their life and that’s kind of how I looked at this book. There is a truly deep love/hate dynamic ever present throughout the plot which helps build tension as the story progresses. I get that the Author is trying to show how frustrated Suzette is with her child and how Hanna has pushed Suzette to the breaking point. The family is dysfunctional, the mother stressed and overwhelmed by motherhood as well as trying to figure out her troubled daughter demonstrates appalling behavior.Her debut novel, Baby Teeth, has been optioned for film by Village Roadshow and Valparaiso Pictures. Unfortunately, the story leaned a bit too heavily toward the horror side of things, and I found myself pretty dissatisfied . Now there were a few scenes intended to shock the reader which I think would definitely make this book not an enjoyable read for some but, for this reader to be totally honest once I read those scenes they were totally forgotten.

Due to Hanna being non-communicative and combative, Suzette is forced to keep her home and provide all of the child's schooling and care. One of the largest themes that can be found in Baby Teeth is the mother-daughter relationship and Suzette and Hanna’s interactions with one another are absolutely fascinating to read about.Hannah thinks that life would be perfect if she could murder her mom and have dad all to herself and her attempts to do so escalate until Alex finally has to believe that his daughter is a sociopath/psychopath. THIS BOOK seems to me - to be an intentionally disturbing novel - for the pure pleasure of the thrill. It completely took me out of the reading experience since his character irritated me and not in a cool or evil way. Martin’s who I always appreciate- ( I’m so sorry - this book just wasn’t healthy for my soul), and Zoje Stage.
