About this deal

Cover image for 75960620335200511 DEFENDERS: BEYOND #5 JAVIER RODRIGUEZ COVER, by Al Ewing & Javier Rodriguez & Javier Rodriguez, in stores Wednesday, November 23, 2022 from marvel Eldritch Location: The Fifth, Dark Cosmos. It's a world of raw, untamed magic, where there's no sun. The Third Cosmos is even more eldritch, being a place where time is nascent and space has no meaning. The Fourth Cosmos is less bad, but time and space are still looser here. It's also less a multiverse with people and more a collection of the archetypes that would be the basis for the Seventh and Eighth Cosmoses. Inconvenient Summons: None of the ad-hoc team were given any heads up before Stephen calls on them, but Betty is especially annoyed since she and the Hulk were about to rescue Bruce Banner from the Leader. It'll be even more inconvenient down the line since the cost of using magic is steep. But Doctor Strange was desperate.

Bilingual Bonus: When Carlos Zota casts the spell, he says, "Ventis Di Tempore... Audi Vocem Meam..." If you know Latin (or Google Translate), it reads, "Winds of time...hear my voice..." So you know he's casting a time travel spell before the Masked Raider tells us.Al Ewing and Javier Rodríguez follow up their acclaimed DEFENDERS: THERE ARE NO RULES series with a new volume and an all-new lineup, including none other than Loki, God of Stories! Defenders (subtitled There Are No Rules for the collected edition) is 2021 limited series from Marvel Comics. It's written by Al Ewing, with art by Javier Rodriguez. The "Dominion" is possibly referring to the "Dominions" that are mentioned in Powers of X #5. It is not clear though because the Dominions are a type of universal society but the Dominion here is an unknown threat from outside the Multiverse. Our non-team of fearless DEFENDERS meet their maker in the HOUSE OF IDEAS and have a chat with THE ONE ABOVE ALL . But is EVERYTHING as it SEEMS ? Defenders: Beyond #5 created by Al Ewing and Javier Rodríguez, letters by Joe Caramagna. Mark Turetsky: Hey Karen, for our final Defenders Beyond review, I wanted us to meet God. I bought these mushrooms from this guy who guaranteed we would, but it turns out they’re just cans of cream of mushroom soup. So happy Thanksgiving, I guess?

When Adam Kadmon, sorry, Brashear, questions The One Above All, they respond with a direct quote from The Book of Job. They ask, “Where were you when I laid these foundations?!” It’s the question that God asks Job when Job demands to know why God has allowed him to suffer. One can read God’s response as being akin to, “excuse me, who are you again?” or else it could be a much more gentle response along the lines of a generous “I could explain it, but you wouldn’t understand, because you literally can’t conceive of my plan for the world.” The modern Jewish interpretation that I’ve learned is that we don’t know why God allows suffering. You could be the most pious, generous person, and bad stuff can still happen to you because we have no way of even conceiving what God has in store. This series also sees you returning to two characters from one of your past cosmic series The Ultimates: America Chavez and the Blue Marvel. What's it like returning to them? What do you feel they bring to this particular story? Doctor Strange: the Magician, reversed. In need of new experiences. Resisting change, or love, or missing something, some vital synchronicity or portent. Mark: We’ve reached Keter, The Crown! This is the highest point on the Tree Of Life. What goes on here is utterly beyond human comprehension. The One Above All speaks in the great big caption speech that Ewing loves so much (see Utlimates, the first issue of S.W.O.R.D., and Immortal Hulk for other examples). THE FINAL TRIAL OF LOKI! The final trial of Loki, America Chavez and the rest of the Defenders sees them entering…the one and only House of Ideas!

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of March 9, 2022

Kether/keter (sometimes translated as “crown”) is the topmost sephirot. Above human comprehension, it’s often referred to as “absolute compassion.” In keeping with the concept of Kether, the Defenders – and readers – find themselves in the House of Ideas, face to face with “God” (who speaks in the language of Job). And as Loki is faced with the possibility of escaping the status quo (and of abandoning everyone else to it), we are asked to suspend our disbelief. To believe they have a choice. In cape comics, the status quo usually ensures that heroes stay heroic and villains stay villainous and no one ever dies. In the words of this Loki to his younger self, “the House always wins.” In the words of TVTropes.com, “Status Quo is God.” In Defenders: Beyond, we are playfully, poignantly offered another idea: Status Quo is NOT God. And if it’s not, what or who is God? The team being assembled very inconveniently by magic to resolve a crisis is something the first iteration had to deal with. They were cursed by Gaia to forcibly assemble anytime a crisis threatened the world. Don’t miss the latest extraordinary DEFENDERS epic from Al Ewing and Javier Rodríguez when DEFENDERS: BEYOND hits stands on June 16. The Beyonder references the "debaser unit" from Captain America and the Mighty Avengers #5– 7. The Blue Marvel's son, Kevin, removes him from reality in issue #7. The Defenders each get to ask the One Above All their most pressing question. Taaia is still disturbed by the knowledge of her son’s inevitable future as Galactus, which will keep her from returning home. America Chavez is reassured that her sister is still out there, and Tigra will get to go home… eventually. Blue Marvel still has eyes planted firmly on the mission, and asks after what has brought them all so far. “The face of Eternity’s enemy.”

Phoenix's outfit is notably white, which may suggest Taaia is a White Phoenix like Jean Grey in New X-Men #154 or Hope Summers in Avengers vs. X-Men #12. Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Zota angrily rants at the inhabitants of the Fourth Cosmos that he "gave [them] conflict" and meaning. As per Marvel Comics #1000, Zota was one of the Scientists' Guild from the Human Torch story in Marvel Comics #1; in other words, Zota did cause the conflict of the first story set in the Marvel Universe. The Silver Surfer: Judgment, reversed. Self-doubt. Fear of judgment. For wrongs done. A message unheeded. Phoenix's words to the Defenders are a modified version of what Phoenix says in X-Men #101 and X-Men #134: " Hear me, X-Men! No longer am I the woman you knew! I am fire! And life incarnate! Now and forever-- I am Phoenix!"Ewing’s artful weaving and referencing of previous bits of continuity, whether directly connected or disparately scattered, is in full effect here. This is all the more apparent due to the scale of the series, which sees our group facing down conceptual entities from across the universes; without giving the bigger reveals away, the likes of Galactus makes a brief appearance, though his presence is far from the most exciting scene (though it is exciting, more on that later). The final entity is the First Firmament. The story of the Cosmic Jailer is told throughout Ultimates (Vol. 3) and Ultimates 2 (Vol. 2). He makes his proper debut in Ultimates 2 (Vol. 2) #5– 6 and is defeated in Ultimates 2 #100. The Blue Marvel and the Ultimates play a key role. Issue 4 has many to the final issue of Ewing's run of Ultimates. That story revealed the Fourth Eternity is, in the present day, on a "journey into mystery". At the end of issue 4, she makes an appearance, explaining her reasoning to the Defenders. The whole issue borrows that series' Arc Words of "everything lives, nothing dies".

‘X-Force’ #38 offers closure for Domino

I am as I am. I will be what I will be.” Both are valid translations of the original Hebrew אֶהְיֶה אֲשֶׁר אֶהְיֶה‎‎ The astronaut-looking entity is the Infinaut. The Blue Marvel's history with him is shown in Ultimates (Vol. 3) #9. The Blue Marvel encounters the Beyond Corporation in Captain America and the Mighty Avengers #5– 7. Mor-i-Dun will one day survive the end of the Fifth Cosmos, and Strange already knows this, what with having met his future self, so killing him by dragging him to the Below Place won't keep him down forever. It just means he's going to get there the hard way. LOLtron, the management here at Bleeding Cool has paired me with you in hopes of "improving the overall tone and quality of my work," so though I know I will regret it, I am contractually obligated to ask: what did you think of the preview of Defenders: Beyond #5? And this time, please… try not to malfunction and attempt to take over the world.
