Dax, Max (February 6, 2023). "The new reinvention of Bob Dylan". Der Spiegel . Retrieved February 6, 2023. Matrix / Runout (Side L runout): 19439981981-L 243083E2 1222746 MRP3791/19439981981/06-B STERLING RKS This collection, which stretches to 5 CDs in the full box set, covers not just the 11 songs which were released as the original album, but also those songs which missed the cut, some of which made it onto subsequent releases. As with previous Bootleg Series releases, this provides the listener with a real insight into the whole process of developing and recording the songs, and that whole journey towards the final product that we have enjoyed for so many years. However, whilst there will be an inevitable and understandable focus on the new outtakes and alternate versions of the songs on discs 2 and 3, the significance of the 2022 remix should certainly not be overlooked. The next in Bob Dylan’s Bootleg Series– Vol. 17 – will be called Fragments – Time Out Of Mind Sessions (1996-1997) and will be available in four physical formats which offer a new stereo remix of the album, outtakes & alternative versions and more. Latest chapter in acclaimed Bootleg Series unveils Time Out of Mind 2022 Remix + previously unreleased recordings including studio outtakes, alternate versions and live performances (1997-2001) of songs penned by Dylan for 1998’s Grammy-Winning Album of the Year

The question is, how can you improve on a multiple Grammy award-winning album? Well, the intention of the remix by Michael H. Brauer, who also did a great job in remixing the iconic 1966 ‘Royal Albert Hall’ bootleg for Bootleg Series 4, was not to replace the original but to offer an alternative. What he did do was focus on recreating the intimate atmosphere within the recording sessions themselves, finding the sound that they actually heard in the studio at the time, thereby removing many of the effects and processing that were added by Lanois later on in the recording process. Matrix / Runout (Side K runout): 19439981981-K 243083E1 1222750 MRP3791/19439981981/06-A STERLING RKS The latest chapter in the highly acclaimed Dylan Bootleg Series takes a fresh look at ‘Time Out of Mind’, Dylan’s mid-career masterpiece, celebrating the album and its enduring impact 25 years after its original release on September 30, 1997. It follows the evolution of songs written for the album, from intimate early incarnations in the previously unreleased 1996 Teatro sessions featuring Dylan (vocals, guitar, and piano), Daniel Lanois (guitar and organ), Tony Garnier (bass) and Tony Mangurian (drums and percussion) through incandescent live renditions (also previously unreleased) showcasing Dylan and his touring ensemble channeling the songs on-stage from 1998-2001. Fragments – Time Out Of Mind Sessions (1996 – 1997): The Bootleg Series Vol. 17 features a 2022 remix of the album alongside previously unreleased recordings including studio outtakes, alternate versions and live performances from 1997 – 2001. Dreamin’ of You” is joined by “Red River Shore,” “Marchin’ to the City,” and “Mississippi” as songs that, while not making the final cut on Time Out of Mind, were first revealed on the eighth volume of the Bootleg Series, Tell Tale Signs. Some of those versions reappear on Fragments (on the final disc), but they’re joined by previously unheard takes as well. “Mississippi” in particular goes through many variations, from acoustic blues to a more anthemic full-band take similar to its final version on Love and Theft. Again, Dylan tries on different vocal personas throughout each, from an aching plea to a seductive wink. Same lyrics, but the switch in delivery somehow alters and deepens their meaning.Selected items are only available for delivery via the Royal Mail 48® service and other items are available for delivery using this service for a charge.

Fragments’ Bears Witness to Bob Dylan’s Late ALBUM REVIEW: ‘Fragments’ Bears Witness to Bob Dylan’s Late

Disc One opremieres 2022 mixes, by Michael H. Brauer at Brauer Sound Studios, of the eleven original recordings on ‘Time Out of Mind’. In his liner notes for the set, Steven Hyden writes, “The album itself has been remixed to sound more like how the songs came across when the musicians originally played them in the room, without the effects and processing that Lanois applied later. It’s not meant to replace the Time Out of Mind that won all of those Grammys a quarter-century ago; it’s a reimagining, an alternate view of a great work of art. If the original album remains mythic and enigmatic, this Time Out of Mind puts you in close proximity to the players.” The remix disc will be available in immersive audio, a first for a Bob Dylan recording.Dutchcharts.nl – Bob Dylan – The Bootleg Series Vol. 17 - Fragments - Time Out of Mind Sessions (1996-1997)" (in Dutch). The torch song ‘Make You Feel My Love’ is stripped to bare essentials, yet already feels special – few would predict that it would wind up being covered by Adele, P!NK, Billy Joel, and around 200 other artists… but it carries a certain magic, a sparkle right from the off.

Dylan’s Fragments - The Spectator Bare and spectral: Bob Dylan’s Fragments - The Spectator

The album features seminal recordings from the artist’s coffeehouse era (Gerde’s Folk City, 1962), his mythic 1963 breakout concerts at New York’s Town Hall and Carnegie Hall, a duet with Joan Baez from the historic March on Washington (August 28, 1963), definitive performances from his European and world tours of 1965 and 1966, incandescent moments from the 1964 and 1965 Newport Folk Festivals and more. Dylan’s near-fatal illness in 1997 inevitably altered the way in which Time Out Of Mind was received once it had been released, even though the whole situation was merely circumstantial. However, with the benefit of the new remix and a whole bunch of outtakes and alternate takes contained throughout Fragments, we are now able to view this album in a completely new light. Whilst I appreciate there will be a wide range of views on this from within the Dylan community, from a personal perspective, all of this has cemented my view of Time Out Of Mind as one of the greatest albums Dylan has ever released. We can only wonder what other great riches sit within Dylan’s vaults to be uncovered through future releases in the Bootleg Series. A ghostly muffled yell shakes you just before the words begin to fall. Digital versions of the complete (five disc) and highlights (two disc) editions of Bob Dylan – Fragments – Time Out of Mind Sessions (1996-1997): The Bootleg Series Vol.17 will be available on all streaming platforms on Friday, January 27.Fragments, which comes as a 5-CD or 10-LP box set (or a 2-CD/4-LP set of highlights), begins with a fresh remix of the full Time Out of Mind album. In these mixes, the entrancing veil of swampy murk is mostly stripped away, revealing a more authentic sense of the rooms in which the sessions were recorded (at Teatro in Oxnard, California, and Criteria in Miami). Dylan’s voice is more upfront, the mix more immediate, live, and spontaneous. Dreamin’ of You’ (later soldered in part into ‘Standing In the Doorway’, which sounds nothing like it) follows, with a zingy, sparkling start that you can almost see, like a spinning disco ball, despite Dylan’s leadoff statement that “The light in this place is really bad.” About 'Red River Shore’ — well, I’ll save that for the last. With that in mind, the first disc in this 5CD offering is a new 2022 remix of the original release, by engineer, Michael Brauer, who says he was trying to capture something that had more of a feel of what was going on in the room, with less additional processing. To be fair, with the new version, Brauer has nailed it – the remix is sharper, crisper and live-sounding; the performances are more intimate and immersive. It’s like you’re sat in the studio with Dylan and his band. November 17, 2022-New York, NY-Columbia Records and Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, will release Bob Dylan – Fragments – Time Out of Mind Sessions (1996-1997): The Bootleg Series Vol.17 on Friday, January 27.
