About this deal

While our at-home tester wasn't impressed with the overall build quality, noting its mediocre plastic construction, she was impressed with its overall performance. "It doesn't have the fanciest design, but it's good for what it is and what you pay for."

Automatic litter boxes tend to have a large footprint. Our favorite overall, the Litter-Robot 4, takes up a lot of space. Measuring your intended space in advance is key, but even a space that will technically fit may look cramped or crowded. Automatic litter boxes tend to come in two basic forms: rotating cylinders and rakes. Cylinder-shaped litter boxes are necessarily tall, and can look quite imposing in a small space. Litter boxes that use electric rakes to clear the box of clumps often have a lower profile. If you have a multiple cats and/or a larger cat, like Maine Cooncat or a Norweigan Forestfeline, the 10 x 8 inch entry to the PetKit PuraMax Automatic Litter Box offers a more comfortable and spacious port for cats to get through. It also has a lower entry point—approximately eight inches from the ground—making it more suitable for senior cats with mobility limitations and cats with shorter legs. This app-controlled, self-cleaning litter box is the larger version of the the PetKit Pura X Self-Cleaning Litter Box, our choice for Best Odor Control, and it has a lot of the same highly quality features. It's sufficient to cleanlyabsorb up to 20 days worth of urine, or until the disposable litter tray needs to be tossed How many pets do you have? If you live in a multi-cat house, a box that cleans itself can save you a ton of time! This is because youwon't have to change out the litter as frequently. Even if you only have one feline friend roaming about, you can still expect to spend a fraction of the time on minding her litter boxes compared to what you would spend using a standard box.

How did we choose these robot litter boxes?

Newcomer Natusan is a 100% sustainable cat litter that absorbs up to seven times its own weight, forming tight clumps that we found super easy to remove. The tiny wood pulp-based granules (all a by-product of the timber industry) smell lovely, and absorb unpleasant whiffs really well to keep your home pong-free. We did find a few clean particles in the carpet, courtesy of our long-haired cat, but the dirty litter clumped so well that it didn’t end up outside the box. During our real world testing in a home with three cats of varying weights, the automatic cleaning setting and built in sensors were able to safely recognize when each cat was entering and exiting. It's also simple to trigger a cleaning session on demand from the litter box or the app on your mobile device. It works best with clumping cat litter and after each relatively quiet cleaning session it transports all odor-causing waste to a sealed waste bin. Admit it: your pampered kitty acts like a cute little queen. Doesn't shedeserve a clean and luxurious “throne”?Let her relieve herself as nature intended in a private, stylish, state-of-the-artconsole that will fit subtly into your decor. We also recommend a litter box that uses silica crystals. This can be an excellent option if you dislike clay dust. It also absorbs smells well. However, you may want to acclimate your cat to crystal litter before springing an automatic litter box on them, since not all cats adjust well to the silica crystals. Beginning with ease of setup, our testers timed how long it took to get an automatic litter box up and running. If directions were confusing, or an app annoying, our testers let us know. Next, it was time to put the litter boxes to the test, running them through a methodology designed to determine their ease of use. This included evaluations of each box's interface, and putting it through the paces of a manual cleaning cycle. Many cat owners have resorted to teaching their feline friends how to use the actual toilet. But this can be a prettyfrightening for most cats—and a frustrating process for most pet parents!Cleaning the Litter-Robot 4 was also a cinch. The bags used in the reservoir are tall enough that even an over-stuffed reservoir is easy to empty—simply lift up the edges of the bag and use that extra height to tie it off. There's a QR code on the bottom of the reservoir that provides a retail link for easily purchasing new bags, smell filters, and even litter (but it doesn't require proprietary litter, and worked great with our generic, store-bought litter). The ideal place is in a low-traffic, low-noise area where your cat regularly goes. It should be on a hard and sturdy surface and easy for your cat to access in multiple ways. How do I help my cat get used to her new fancy toilet? Of course, this means buying a whole new tray of crystal litter every month, or even more often. So while the PetSafe ScoopFree is much more affordable than our Best Overall automatic littler box, the cost of using the same expensive litter each month will add up fast. While it's possible to dump out the waste reservoir without completely replacing the litter tray, our tester found this to be an unwieldy task, requiring lifting away the entire upper assembly of the device. Ready to browse the internet for thebest self cleaning litter box? Before you do, you may want to ask yourself a few questions:

The control panel on the Litter-Robot 4 features big, colorful buttons, though the wide variety of settings and cleaning options can make for a bit of a learning curve. In addition to a power button, there are buttons for "Cycle,""Reset,""Empty" and WiFi "Connect," with each button performing multiple functions. For example, the Cycle button initiates a cleaning, or you can hold down the button for three seconds to activate a "Sleep Mode," ensuring a cleaning cycle won't be activated for eight hours. A big, friendly light bar beneath the buttons delivers a wide range of information, indicating when a function has been paused, or even when a cat has spent too long inside the machine. It's pretty intuitive, but a little overwhelming at first—one tester mistakenly emptied all of the litter, rather than initiating a standard clean. Depending on the number of cats in your home, the bin should be emptied out at least every two weeks for optimal use. But the litter box itself is wide (over two feet in length), so it takes up more space in a home than other automatic litter boxes on our list.

Pet Zone Smart Scoop Automatic Litter Box

If your cat isn't using the new litter box, you can try sprinkling a little catnip inside the automatic box. There's also training litter, designed to attract reluctant cats. If you've never thought about owning a new litter box that self cleans instead of a traditional litter box, here are 3 reasons you may change your mind: While we think the Litter-Robot 4 is a substantial improvement over its predecessor, the Litter-Robot 3 Connect is still a high quality product. It's a little larger (more than 2 inches wider), less attractively designed, and a little louder, but the reduced price might make the previous Litter-Robot model worth your consideration. Read our comprehensive review for more details. Finally, testers were asked to give their overall impressions, rating how they perceived the product's value, both before and after learning the retail price. Thanks to the continual waste removal mechanism, you can get more “use” out of your litter since there's less of a chance for foul-smelling bacterial growth
