About this deal

The shiraz grape contributes a mid-palate fruit sweetness, with plush fruit weight, well balanced with structural oak and supportive tannins. The makers of Game of Thrones have teamed up with Wolf Blass to produce a wine to coincide with an upcoming spin-off of the popular TV series. The wine, launched into the shops on June 22, precedes the apparently much-anticipated HBO Game of Thrones prequel, House Of The Dragon. House of the Dragon tells the story of the House Targaryen set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones. It stars Emma D’Arcy as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, Matt Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen, Steve Toussaint as Lord Corlys Velaryon and Rhys Ifans as Otto Hightower. This exciting partnership with Warner Bros Consumer Products is the next chapter in the Wolf Blass story, defining the brand’s philosophy now and into the future. It follows Wolfgang Blass’ attitude to life and wine, challenging the status quo and encouraging fans and wine drinkers from around the world to not to settle for anything less than great.” Game of Thrones is apparently “one of the most-watched TV series in history,” according to the press release.

Andrew Bromell, Vice President, Warner Bros Consumer Products ANZ, added: “With such immense anticipation and momentum building ahead of the launch, we knew we needed to partner with a globally recognised brand of quality that shared the same vision and ambition – which was tapping into the zeitgeist and identifying an appetite for a wine that was aligned with the world of Westeros,”Wolf Blass Chief Winemaker Chris Hatcher said: “This classic Australian blend, was born out of Wolf Blass’ spirited approach to soar above the rest, encapsulating the brand’s refusal to settle and passionately strive for the best through premium, quality, affordable wine. Treasury Wine Estates has teamed up with Warner Bros to celebrate the release of HBO’s House of the Dragon, the hotly anticipated prequel to one of the most-watched TV series in history – Game of Thrones. Julian Moon, Senior Vice President, Warner Bros. Consumer Products EMEAsaid, “We wanted to bring fans of the Game of Thrones franchise a wine aligned with the world of Westeros and with the anticipated premiere of House of the Dragon this summer, we knew this was the perfect time for such a wine. Wolf Blass has made something truly special, and we know fans will enjoy sipping Wolf Blass’ Fire & Blood Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz while tuning in to House of the Dragon this August.” As one who decides what films to see by observing the length of the queue (the shortest queues correlate with the best movies) my first reaction to this news was to stifle a yawn. But that probably just reveals me to be a bit of a snob.

Declaration: I must be the only person in the universe to have never watched a single episode of Game of Thrones.

Ben Blake, Head of Marketing EMEA at Treasury Wine Estates, adds; “Wolf Blass was born from the spirit of its founder to never settle but soar above the rest. The opportunity to therefore partner with Warner Bros. Consumer Products on a House of the Dragon-inspired wine was a no brainer. It’s a well-made wine as we’d expect from Wolf Blass, not oaky in the traditional Blass style but fruit-driven, nor especially powerful, but soft textured, easy drinking and just a little raw and simple. I AM a self-confessed Game of Thrones addict and had read all the books way before the series came to our screens. Therefore, I have to admit I was a touch sceptical about the launch of a red wine to coincide with HBO’s House of the Dragon, a prequel following the history of the Targaryen family 100 or so years before Daenerys encountered the White Walkers; but I should not have worried.
