About this deal

I tried to step outside of my perspective and evaluate the film on its own merits, and to consider how someone who had not read the book might experience it. They don't want his experimental novels about Sophocles, but if he wrote about "the Black experience", like a truly terrible and exploitative bestseller he sees. Amusing, perhaps, only to an academic with a sense of humor, but I’d like to have five dollars for every befuddled intellectual who put shoulder to the wheel and tried to make sense of the nonsense. Everett explores race, class, loyalty to family, sex, the theory of language, the life of canonical western artists, abortion, and sexual identity as the novel unfolds. He has served as a judge for, among others, the 1997 National Book Award for fiction and the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction in 1991.

In 2023, it was adapted by Cord Jefferson as a film titled American Fiction, starring Jeffrey Wright. For those unfamiliar with this author who appreciate character, plot and style, I urge you to dip your toe into his writing which in my opinion ranks with the best. And according to The Boston Globe, “He’s literature’s NASCAR champion, going flat out, narrowly avoiding one seemingly inevitable crash only to steer straight for the next.what ellison the character argues in ERASURE is that blackness is, must be, wide enough to include his own subjectivity. The protagonist, Thelonious "Monk" Ellison, a professor of English literature, is in a rut with his writing.

Erasure is] hilarious, absurd, profound, and disturbing, in ways that couldn’t be more relevant to today’s nominally post-racial cultural moment. Everett's subject is serious, but his tone, social observations and stylistic inventiveness reach for the bleakest comedy. It's gotten very good reviews, but I think I'll reread the book at some point, rather than seeing the film. I was much more interested in the publishing and soi-disant avant-gardist parts than the family drama parts (though there again, I suspect the family drama may be part of the point, both about form and about the 'easy lives' of those who aren't 'black enough').Right away, the film wades into the culture wars as Monk is “cancelled” for bringing confrontational material into the classroom.
