About this deal

The book centers on four sisters – Fatima, Bubblee, Farah, and Mae. Bubblee and Farah are twins. The title is somewhat misleading as what secrets there are not really the sister’s (honesty, the one you think might be Bubblee’s never shows) but those of their family. Additionally, the book is almost wrapped about too neatly – though a couple plot threads are left, satisfying loose. There are a couple places where you are wondering – wow, really would that happen – but not too many. Not much has changed since then; I still have a habit of saying no, but mostly to my long suffering dad. But a lot has changed too… Besides those two, we have Bubblee and Mae. Now these two are determined and dream of being an artist in London and a YouTube star. I definitely liked each sister because they brought something different to the book. They all had pros and cons that made them feel realistic and easy to relate to. I also really liked how I got to know more about Bangladeshi roots throughout this. Mostly because I do have friends from that area and it's always interesting to hear about.

Nadiya Jamir Hussain [1] MBE ( née Begum; [2] born 25 December 1984) is a British television chef, [3] [4] author [5] and television personality. [6] She rose to fame after winning the sixth series of BBC's The Great British Bake Off in 2015. [7] Since winning, she has signed contracts with the BBC to host the documentary The Chronicles of Nadiya and TV cookery series Nadiya's British Food Adventure [8] and Nadiya's Family Favourites; [9] co-presented The Big Family Cooking Showdown; [10] and has become a regular contributor on The One Show. The Secret Lives of the Amir Sisters was surprisingly never on my radar until recently. I think that's the amazing thing about participating in challenges within Goodreads. One can never run out of options for books to dive into and that's why I decided to jump into this one.

The four Amir sisters - Fatima, Farah, Bubblee and Mae - are the only young Muslims in the quaint English village of Wyvernage. She gets that a lot on social media. “I get bits of my books ripped apart because, am I English enough to be writing these things? It upsets me because there are cooks out there who… Jamie can do Italian. He’s allowed to own that as something he loves to do and something that is his, but I can’t do a Cornish pasty. That’s what’s wrong with this industry and that’s what’s wrong with this society and that’s what’s wrong with the world. Because I’m a daughter of an immigrant, because I am bilingual, because I’m a Muslim, because I’m a brown woman, because I don’t fit into that industry or fit into these worlds, I’m constantly up for scrutiny. I’m constantly up for questioning. I’m kind of fed up of it.” Nadiya has opened up about the sexual abuse she suffered as a child and her suicide attempt aged 10, and written about them in her memoir Finding My Voice. In a 2020 interview, she explained how these experiences have shaped who she is today: "Our past and experiences are the things we always carry around with us. For such a long time I tried to smile, wear colourful clothes and ignore the fact that those scars were there.
