About this deal

I have sometimes described myself as a cockroach, mostly in reference to the general resilience that I hope I have been able to embody, but also in reference to the trials I have experienced in direct relation to the physical body that I inhabit. Actually, it probably plays avatar for the million other stories about women whose usefulness is predicated on their sexual beauty and the desperation with which they fear the abolition of such a temporary celebrity. Superficial materiality and obsession over physical appearance is self-destructive; the perfect beauty is an illusion. While this story doesn’t really do anything new, even for the time that it was originally published, it does present the subject matter in Okazaki’s unique style of storytelling, sometimes taking ridiculous and even surreal turns.

It seems that Okazaki must be some sort of human-istic genius that she’s able to create such a contrasting, and unfounded character like Liliko who is both a woman of shame (and artifice) and a symbol of empowerment, as diluted and wrong as the latter may seem – she is, undoubtedly. Their hard-hitting realism driven by “a need for truth” regardless of how bitter, and laced with explorative psychological power has shook and captivated the world with every frame. A woman like her can never be destined for happiness; it is impossible, but through her decadence, her vile nature, and her trapped personality that everyone around her tries so hard to destroy, a woman exists that fights viciously - even if subconsciously and in vain - to live for herself; the way she wants. As mangaka Okazaki suggests, however, hanging your self-worth on something as precarious as your fame as a supermodel, or more simply, your beauty, is a dangerous gamble, and one that will inevitably stop paying off.

The depiction of Liliko's mental health issues during her novel is outstandingly well-presented - it feels like a true tale of a celebrity's inner struggles with fame, beauty, and the fear of losing it.

It is only natural that this reclaiming may be far from what we have been taught to recognize as the ‘correct’ presentation of the woman’s body in art.A last point of interest that must be addressed relates to one of the genres that this manga falls under: Horror. She believes Okazaki implies that the readers are "implicit in the creation of Lilikos with our craving for unattainable beauty in the media. Helter Skelter is a hard book, one that confronts the various cowardices that consumers in our cultures nurture and enjoy.
