About this deal

Eating: You can nibble on the leaves, roots, and stems of this plant, although young leaves are the most prized. Use it cooked in soups or as a side dish. It’s a sobering fact that a few of the most beautiful-looking weeds are the deadliest. If you are at all unsure about a particular weed and can’t make an accurate identification, don’t risk it. Wait until you can consult a reliable source for more information – or leave well enough alone. And don’t forget to get rid of weeds that cause you concern. Here are some of the most striking yet most devastating weeds for humans:

Robin Harford: Okay, great, yep. So Deb’s asked, “Over the past couple of years, I have noticed disfigured acorns on trees. Why is this happening?” However usually in the South West, I am gathering rosehips from the end of September right through to December, and beyond. Robin Harford: Okay, great. So moving on to the removal of tannins, you’ve got a number of questions. The first one’s from Colin, who says, “What is the best way,” so we’re not talking industrial. We’re not talking at the level you’re doing it. We’re talking for home use, people at home. “What is the best way to remove the tannins? Can we use a stream like our forefathers did?” I love sorrel. I planted it in my garden two years ago, and it’s a beautiful specimen. Wood sorrel bares little resemblance to garden sorrel, however. Health-promoting: Our human diets are meant to have more plant biodiversity than what a grocery store provides (i.e., asmall percentage of edible plants). When you diversify your diet, you add vitamins and minerals to your diet. You’ll need to experiment to find tasty ways to serve wildfoods.

This edible weed clearly doesn’t want you to get near it. It’s covered in little spikes from head-to-toe. The effort is worth the result, though.

Marcie Mayer: Well, yes, if I’m very short on acorn, we continue until they’re brown, which involves a lot more sorting, because by the time they hit the ground, they get infested by beetles. The other thing is, you don’t want to collect the very first acorns that fall, because in the beginning of the season, you’ll get one fall of acorns, and they’ll be quite brown as well, early on, and those will surely be infested. And that is why they

Can I eat weeds? Yes, you can!

Robin Harford: So Amanda asks, “I would like to know if the edibility extends to all oaks?” We’ve already answered that question. Yes, all oak acorns are edible, providing you process them correctly, which we’re going to be getting on to. From the firstdandelion rosettes in the spring, edible weeds abound. Then comes the stinging nettle emerging near the berry bushes and the wood sorrel along the edges of the vegetable plot. Bowls of wild salad and cooking greens (“weeds”) will span the weeks until the arrival of our cultivated lettuce, lamb’s-quarters, amaranth, purslane, and others—bowls not only of wild leafy greens, but also of roots, flowers, berries, and stems. The seeds of some species are higher in lipids and nutrients such as calcium and magnesium than many other grains. Herbal Medicine Uses of Fat Hen

Tastes like: This plant has a salty flavor, and it’s often used as a substitute for spinach leaves. Marcie Mayer: I’d probably leave them at least a week. Again, that’s going to depend on the acorn and how long it takes. White acorns, which are more common in Great Britain, tend to take about a week in water.Eating: Consume the shoots in the early spring. Once the cones turn brown, this plant turns bitter. Gabrielle Hatfield says dog rose is one of the longest living plants: “A bush growing in Hildesheim in Germany was said to have been planted there in AD 850 by Emperor Charlemagne’s son”.
