About this deal

The automatic timer works a treat and adds value, while the continuous dehumidification mode is useful for any areas or rooms that are especially susceptible to damp or moisture. Overall, it’s a brilliant thing for the money. We’ve concentrated on compressor models since they tend to be the most popular type of dehumidifier for the British climate. This 10-litre Meaco model is actually rather attractive for a dehumidifier and we definitely like the simple top-mounted interface. At just 46cm in height and 30cm in width, it’s not too big either and that makes it perfect for smaller rooms like bath and shower rooms – which is what it was ostensibly designed for. The best way to work out how much it cost to run a dehumidifier on its maximum setting is to look at its wattage. Mini models can use as little as 22 watts, while high-volume dehumidifiers go up to around 500 watts.

Desiccant dehumidifiers draw in the air and pass it over material that soaks up moisture like a sponge. They’re ideal for colder areas that might drop below 15C, such as a conservatory or utility room. The desiccant is regenerated by an internal heater so the process can be repeated. The Electriq uses very little energy (180 watts) and comes with an air purifier function replete with plasma ionizer and UV sterilisation for extra air-cleaning pizzazz. According to Electriq it also ‘dries laundry more efficiently than a tumble dryer’. We’re not convinced it was better than our Bosch tumbler but it did dry a pair of jeans in about 90 minutes, so that’s okay.

Swan Sh3050 10-Litre Dehumidifier in-depth review

Dehumidifiers are not the most popular or glamorous of appliances, but they can be among the most useful. If you already have a good extractor fan in your bathroom or utility room you probably will never need one, although some people use them to dry clothing instead of a tumble dryer. In operation, the Inventor does emit a slight hum from the fan although it’s nothing to get too worked up about. There’s built-in air filtration though along with an automatic shut-off function just in case the tank gets full and you’re not around to empty it. The other boon with this machine is that it is reasonably lightweight at 11.4kg, which means you can easily move it to other rooms as and when it’s needed.

The Pro Breeze is great if you’ve got a smaller space and you want something that doesn’t cost a lot to run,” says expert Kandola. “It’s probably about a penny an hour.”

The cost of one kiloWatt-hour of electricity is capped at 27p under the Energy Price Guarantee as of October 2023. Although prices do vary by region and contract (economy 7 tariffs are more expensive by day and cheaper by night, for example), we use the capped price to estimate running costs. You’re not going to see anything beautiful in this feature, but this wifi-enabled compressor model is at least a bit more stylish looking than most. It’s certainly a unanimous hit with users.

Upon receipt of your item we will provide a FOC repair including any mechanical parts, if in the unlikely event the unit is beyond economical repair we will provide a like for like replacement. With advice from air conditioning experts Ryan Kandola and Chris Wood and with help from others in The Telegraph Recommended team, I have tried and tested the best dehumidifiers on the market for energy efficiency, drying power, value for money and, where possible, quiet running. “Remember, size isn’t everything,” Ryan says. “Look at the area you’re dealing with and choose the right size of unit. You’ll be surprised at just how powerful some of the small dehumidifiers are.” High demand The other controls let you choose between quiet Sleep mode, powerful High mode for laundry and economic Low mode for daytime use. You can fine-tune these by setting the fan speed and desired humidity level (you’ll want it under 50 percent, see below). But that’s it. Very much a fire-and-forget machine. I like the way it looks, too. Although it’s an American company, there’s something reassuringly Swiss about it. Maybe that’s just me. Compressors are generally efficient at room temperature, but they can’t handle the winter cold so well. If the temperature drops below three or four centigrade, they will tend to stop working. That’s not the case with desiccants, although they can be more expensive to run. How to use a dehumidifier It’s simply a matter of setting the desired humidity level and the unit will do the rest. What you will need to do is empty the water tank from time to time. Where should you place a dehumidifier?Buy a dehumidifier with these clever functions to help make them as efficient as possible and lower the answer to how much does it cost to run a dehumidifier. 1. Advanced humidistats Choosing a model with more than one speed means you can have it on low on days when you need it less. Alternatively, the latest dehumidifiers can select the right speed for you, taking the guesswork out of having it on too high or too low. 3. Laundry drying function As with all dehumidifiers, the 25L’s extraction rate varies depending on the temperature and humidity in the room but, to use an extreme example, at a rather stifling 30˚C and 80% humidity it will absorb 24.96 litres in a 24-hour period. That’s a lot of water extracted from seemingly nowhere. Don’t worry about it overflowing either since it will switch off when the float in the five-litre water tank hits the top. At 15kg, the Midea is a bit of a challenge to get upstairs. That’s a real shame, because this powerful unit is perfect for bedrooms. It has a built-in ioniser which helps to purify the air and a smart setting which senses and automatically controls the humidity of a room, keeping it between 45 and 55 per cent to reduce any bacteria growth which can lead to mould. In reality, it’s probably a little too powerful for my needs, instead I’d recommend it to anyone with large, open-plan rooms in their houses or a big house with open doors, where it can sit in a hallway. While the power of 290 Watts means it only costs around 8p per hour, there are still lower energy options on this list that anyone with a smaller house or flat should consider.

If the item was delivered by Royal Mail or if you collected the item yourself then you will be required to return it at your expense via the same method. There are two types of dehumidifier, and running costs will be similar provided they are used in the right conditions. Buteach different type of dehumidifier needs different conditions to run efficiently. Use the wrong model in the wrong conditions, the answer to how much does it cost to run a dehumidifier will increase. But enough of that, lets bask in some stats: The Electriq’s water collection tank capacity is four litres; its extraction rate is up to 12 litres per day; it has a 24-hour timer and an operating temperature range of 5˚C to 35˚C. A British built dehumidifier that proves to be deceptively potent, with the ability to remove up to 12.1 litres of moisture a day. It features a compact design, that fits into rooms with ease, while the 2.1 litre collection tank isn’t the biggest but is ideal if you’re only interested in occasional emptying duties. The Inventor is also wonderfully easy to use, with a range of controls that include a digital humidity indicator. Performance-wise it draws 350 Watts, making it one of the most powerful on this list at a competitive price. I tested it in my shower room, where I usually keep a window open to prevent mould. As the mornings get chillier this dehumidifier is the perfect replacement, keeping any mould at bay and the heating in. The auto-defrosting function also means it can carry on working when the temperature drops. However, to work out exactly what one appliance is using you'll first need to find out two things: what your pay for energy per pence/kWh of electricity and the wattage of your dehumidifier. In comparison, an example dehumidifier that can extract up to 12 litres a day, with a wattage of 157w (0.157 kWh) would cost under 5p an hour (4.5p to be exact). The transparent water tank means I can keep tabs on when to empty it although it rarely needs emptying more than once a day. The dehumidifier also automatically switches off when the water tank reaches its maximum capacity of 2.1l. The beauty of a desiccant dehumidifier is not only that they are typically quieter than compressor models, but they are ideal for smaller, unheated areas such as conservatories, campervans, garages, boats and cellars. They’re also fantastically efficient.
