This is an excellent way to teach the facts, especially if you are about to visit France for the first time, without being preached at. The first and only successful slave revolution in the Americas began in 1791 when thousands of brutally exploited slaves rose up against their masters on Saint-Domingue, the most profitable colony in the eighteenth-century Atlantic world. Paxton's classic study both revolutionised and reinvigorated the study of the Vichy period in French history. To manage these new residents, the French government devised Europe's first guest worker program, then encouraged family settlements and finally cracked down on all foreigners on the eve of the Second World War.
