About this deal

Since the publication of his first novel, The Forgotten Island, he has written and published a further eight novels, including the gore-soaked folk-horror Maggie's Grave and the romantic and disturbing The Haar. Despite how much she wants the jelly thing to be her husband she is aware that he actually isn’t him. She doesn’t have many years left and just wants to enjoy them in the home she’s lived in for decades. When I was a little kid, I used to get some friends round and we’d make our own home movies, riffing on whatever horror/action flick we’d enjoyed that week. I went in a bit blind, not really knowing what to expect and what I got was even better than I could have hoped!

The story takes place in Witchaven, a remote coastal village in Scotland where an American billionaire, Patrick Grant, wants to create a designer golf course. is being forced out of their cottages and off their ancestral land by Big Bad American billionaire Patrick Grant. The ending was quite satisfying, so I've updated the rating, but my point still stands: some parts were unnecessary, disgusting and disappoining. So, it should be no surprise that I’m always excited to read what David conjures, knowing how phenomenal of a job he does taking my Playdough manuscript and turning it into a Marble work of art (lol).

A thick, freezing fog known as the haar descends from the sea and envelops the village, giving the setting an eerie atmosphere. What started as an emotional story with creepy but melancholic atmosphere turned into an extremely strange horror romance and almost fetish porn. This usually results in me eating poke bowls for three months straight and then not being able to look at fish and rice for a whole five months after, just to name a very topical example. The Haar is fast and sharp, with gripping twists and a finale that will leave you both stunned and fulfilled.

Review: The Haar by David Sodergren – Escaping in Paper

It's a great don't-fuck-with-old-ladies story where the bad guys didn't stand a chance and never saw what hit 'em. There are a few times we break from the mold to take a glimpse into the life of others like Arthur, Muriel’s close friend, or the guys who are working on the construction site. On one fateful day, Muriel stumbles across a sort of cosmic primordial ooze that may just change her life, and the lives of so many others, for good, and for bad. Muriel Margaret McAuley has seen a lot in her 84 short years, and she’s going to see a lot more over the coming days. But when an overseas property developer threatens to evict the residents from their homes and raze Witchaven to the ground in the name of progress, all seems lost… until the day a mysterious fog bank creeps inland. It’s impressive to see how his writing has grown and refined over his career, though it has always felt mature and sophisticated. It’s as if he’s saying that horror fans will literally watch any old garbage, whether it’s recycled footage from two years prior or just some low budget junk he shot with his friends by the side of a pool.

I’ve already loaded another David Sodergren book into my kindle—Maggie’s Grave—and can’t wait to get into it.The story, oddly enough, shares DNA with Hellraiser, The Thing, Starman and Cocoon (talk about a random stew), and all the elements just blend together perfectly. So many points I could raise, but in short it’s just like a very cheesy 80’s action film, full of cliche and hammy writing. Since my collection ‘Left Hand Path: 13 more tales of black magick’ was eviscerated by some reviewers due to horrendous editing, Sodergren has been by my side guiding my writing, editing and copy/line-editing my work.
