About this deal

Another gem of a B-side, “The Piccadilly Trail” detailed images of loneliness and personal betrayal (“Can you ever explain your need to cause me pain?”) and it’s all the more powerful as the hurt in Weller’s voice is palpable despite the jaunty bossa nova beat and the sophistication of the song’s arrangement. News of the album and its title first leaked on April 1, 2022 via U2Songs.com. However, prior to that Adam Clayton revealed the band were working on such a project in 2021 via U2 X-Radio, sharing, “Well, you know we are playing around with rearranging some of the songs that we have and setting them in a more acoustic environment. Edge got a bit of a bee in his bonnet and said you know, no pun intended, said let’s look at these songs and imagine them in a different context. So we are playing around with that. He’s putting a lot of work into changing the keys, and moving them onto piano and that sort of thing. And hopefully we will have something towards the end of the year that will show a different light on U2. I think it’s an opportunity to explore different versions of the band in a way. Because it’s very much the early days, it’s embryonic, it could go somewhere between Leonard Cohen or Johnny Cash – very stripped down and bare – towards something that is very lush.” At the time Adam was not confident on how the material would be released, and whether it would be a single album, or a series of EPs. The Style Council established their collaborative approach from the off, with Weller and Talbot enlisting Orange Juice drummer Zeke Manyika and vocalist Tracie Young to perform with them on their debut single, “Speak Like A Child,” issued in 1983. A wonderful pop record driven by Weller’s funky bassline, Talbot’s classy Hammond organ, and a joyous chorus, the song cruised to No. 4 in the U.K. and sold over 350,000 copies, categorically proving there was life after The Jam for Paul Weller. The 1982 release The Gift – the band's final studio LP – was a massive commercial success, peaking at No.1 on the UK charts while spending an unprecedented 16 weeks on the US Billboard Hot 100. It featured several soul, funk, and R&B-stylised songs; most notably the No.1 hit " Town Called Malice", which boasts a Motown-style bassline somewhat reminiscent of The Supremes' "You Can't Hurry Love". The song included work by Keith Thomas and Steve Nichol, who later became well known as members of the R&B groups Legacy and Loose Ends respectively. "Town Called Malice", a reality-based tale about dealing with hardship in a small, downtrodden English town, is one of a handful of Jam songs Weller still performs (along with " That's Entertainment", "Man in the Corner Shop", "Strange Town", "Art School", "Start!" and "In the Crowd"). The artwork looks genuine and the catalogues numbers are real, so I think this album was scheduled for release in the USA. However, as well as Paul, Polydor UK would have objected to this release. When Paul went solo, The Jam owed Polydor two albums, which is why ‘Dig The New Breed’ and ‘Snap!’ were released. ‘Snap!’ was a best of / greatest hits compilation and this American compilation would have compromised the release of ‘Snap!’ in the USA. How they got hold of a copy of ‘Solid Bond’ is a mystery, as it was never mastered and I wouldn’t have allowed them to release it. Paul had made it clear at the time that he was saving the toon for TSC. As The Jam were signed to Polydor UK, and all foreign compilations would have needed clearance from my company, which they would never have given for the above reasons. Beat Surrender" was the Jam's final single, and was released on 22 November 1982. It became the band's fourth and last No. 1 hit in the UK Singles Chart for two weeks in December 1982.
