About this deal

I have liked Calladine through all four books. His internal thoughts don't always match his spoken words. He seems bumbling sometimes, but he's really not. I do like the players in these books: Ruth, Imogen, Rocco. I don’t like Lydia or DCI Jones. Lydia is just slutty and Jones is a cheap-skate, too concerned with saving money than solving crimes. Someone is targeting students from the USA…A serial killer, a local, hunting students who look like a woman he calls “Vida”. I am fairly new to reading books by Helen H Durrant but I have read two so far and loved both them. I had this one on my wish list so was delighted when it was released. I love her writing style, the characters are great and work so well together. The plots are realistic, detailed and you can imagine them happening, unlike some other books out there which are good but a bit too unrealistic for me.

I read the first book in this series a few months ago and liked DI Tom Calladine so I was looking forward to this second book. In the first book, Tom had a lot of problems. Most have not resolved in this book, but that's what makes him interesting. His love life hasn't changed, his boss is still a poor manager, and his mother has recently died.Someone is targeting American students and who is Vida? How can these young women go missing and nobody knows or cares? Except Alice, a student who has been doing a bit of amateur investigation.

I found the engagement of previous characters believable and this helps drive the story forward and makes for a more 3 dimensional accouunt. There were also a few other threads that were left hanging but I believe this is the first in a series of novels so I shall look forward to reading the next one to see how these threads are tied up. Tom e Ruth (i detective) costituiscono tutto sommato un buon tandem, anche se la più sveglia sembra lei (e anche maliziosetta, ma leale). Lui, invece, l'ho trovato alquanto suggestionabile, indeciso e insofferente e ha reso un po' insofferente anche me.Am I going to read the next book in this series? I certainly plan to! Do I recommend this one? Not to would be – well, it would be Dead Wrong! Another stunningly good police procedural from Helen H. Durrant. Fabulous plot and great characters, with everything I want from a whodunnit.’ Amanda P. Perhaps as an old middle aged man who craves female attention beyond my wife's love and daughters' appreciation I find Calladine a little grating as he seems always to attract women who want him while he seems disfunctional in his own understanding of how to keep a relationship working. Dead Wrong is the first in the Calladine and Bayliss series. I've had this book for some time and came across it whilst scrolling through on my Kindle. Sooo many books! *sigh* Tom Calladine is a single, divorced, fifty-one-year-old detective inspector who is totally devoted to his job. His personal life, however, is not so successful.

There is a good introduction to the 'flawed' characters that will be around in this series and I am sure we are going to learn a lot more. These characters feel relatable and real, and these two are both hard working cops. They just attempt to do their best and care for the ones they are working to protect. Dead Wrong” by Helen H. Durrant, is the first in a new series of detective thrillers featuring police partners , D.I. Tom Calladine and D.S. Ruth Bayliss. I decided to read these three books in the series; Dead Wrong, Dead Silent and Dead List, before I started a new series by this author (Dark Murder). This is my first read of any novel by author Helen H Durrant but I was drawn in by her writing style and flawed but believable characters. This book opens with a 'grab you by the throat and pulls you in' kind of start, which I absolutely loved, that being said, I had to sit and read it in one sitting with hardly leaving my seat until I finished it.

Publication Order of Anthologies

Written with skill and in-depth characterization, this is just the kind of mystery I love to read. That being said, I must warn you that the novel is graphically violent and is not for the squeamish. Another great book from Helen Durrant. She has a lovely writing style that is easy to read making it quite a fast, pacy read that I couldn't put down. The Detective Inspector on the case is Tom Calladine. He is in his early fifties, a workaholic, and a bit of a womanizer with commitment phobia. He has a steady ‘girl-friend’ whom he doesn’t love, and an elderly mother in a nursing home. An old-fashioned copper who works on his instincts, his views are not always popular with the higher ups. Also, he has some family history that precludes him from rising any farther up the ranks…

DNA identifies the victim as Lori Lansing, who was kidnapped three weeks ago. Her wealthy husband paid half a million pounds to secure her release — but he never saw his wife again. My instincts have paid off. This is the fourth in this series set in the fictional pennine towns outside Manchester where DI Calladine & DS Bayliss ply their investigative trade. I am rewarded at last with a story that matches the skill of the author and allows me to write my most positive review to date. Calladine and Bayliss have been called in to investigate a death. What they find is the body of a young woman, who has been brutally tortured, killed, and burned. What they eventually find is a link to American female students attending the British college. One thing I think it's worth mentioning for those of you who may be new to this series is this is the first time (that I've seen) one of these books ends on a cliff-hanger. Although, if you look at how many are in the series, I'm sure you can figure out how it ends for at least one character. This book delivers in just about every way possible. Excellent police work, personal nuances that allow the characters a chance to come alive, and a good mystery. The start of a fabulous new series from Helen H. Durrant . . . Brilliant book — I loved it!’ Charlotte M.
