Liver damage is possible in adults who have taken 10 g or more of paracetamol. Ingestion of 5 g of more of paracetamol may lead to liver damage if the patient has risk factors (see below).

You have non-cirrhotic liver disease (liver disease that is not associated with changes in the structure of the liver) Phenylephrine overdose is likely to result in: nervousness, headache, dizziness, insomnia, increased blood pressure, nausea, vomiting, reflex bradycardia, mydriasis, acute angle closure glaucoma (most likely to occur in those with closed angle glaucoma), tachycardia, palpitations, allergic reactions (e.g. rash, urticaria, allergic dermatitis), dysuria, urinary retention (most likely to occur in those with bladder outlet obstruction, such as prostatic hypertrophy). If you take Lemsip max day & night cold & flu relief in the hour before or the six hours after taking colestyramine, the paracetamol is likely to be less effective. This is because colestyramine reduces the absorption of paracetamol from the gut. Do not take anything else containing paracetamol while taking this medicine. Talk to a doctor at once if you take too much of this medicine, even if you feel well. This is because too much paracetamol can cause delayed, serious liver damage. Seek advice before using if you are breast feeding, pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or suffer from allergies.

Indications

Paracetamol is a well-known painkiller (analgesic). It is effective against aches and pains, including a headache, and can also reduce a fever (antipyretic). Caffeine (a mild stimulant), helps relieve fatigue and drowsiness through the day (it is only used in the Day capsule). Phenylephrine hydrochloride (nasal decongestant) reduces swelling in the passages of the nose, relieving nasal congestion and reducing the pressure which may cause a headache. Lemsip Max Day & Night Cold & Flu Relief Capsules contain a combination of ingredients which are effective in relieving the symptoms associated with colds and flu, including relief of aches and pains, sore throats, headache, nasal congestion and lowering of temperature. Caffeine/metabolites are excreted in human milk, but at therapeutic doses of the product, no effects on the breastfed new-borns/infants are anticipated.

Don't take Lemsip max flu lemon if you have taken a type of medicine called a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) in the last 14 days. MAOIs include the antidepressants phenelzine, tranylcypromine, isocarboxazid and moclobemide, and the anti-Parkinson's medicines selegiline and rasagiline. This is because the combination of pseudoephedrine with these medicines could cause a dangerous increase in blood pressure (hypertensive crisis). Lemsip Max Day & Night Cold & Flu Relief Capsules are suitable for adults and children aged 16 and older. Take two red and yellow capsules every four to six hours, as required, during the day up to a maximum of three doses (six capsules) in any 24-hour period. At night, take two blue and red capsules. Do not take more than a total of eight Lemsip Max Day & Night Cold & Flu Relief Capsules in any 24-hour period. Do not take with any other paracetamol-containing products.

Directions How to take: For oral use. The capsules should be swallowed whole with water. Do not chew. How much to take: Adults, the elderly and children aged 16 years and over: Take two red and yellow capsules every 4-6 hours during the day to a maximum of 3 doses when necessary. Do not take more than 6 red and yellow capsules in any 24 hours. Take two blue and red capsules at night if needed. Do not take more than 8 capsules (4 doses) in any 24 hours. See leaflet for further information. Care is advised in the administration of paracetamol to patients with severe renal or severe hepatic impairment. The hazard of overdose is greater in those with non-cirrhotic alcoholic liver disease. Paracetamol: Paracetamol is absorbed rapidly and completely mainly from the small intestine, producing peak plasma levels after 15-20 minutes following oral dosing. The systemic availability is subject to first-pass metabolism and varies with dose between 70% and 90%. The drug is rapidly and widely distributed throughout the body and is eliminated from plasma with a T ½ of approximately 2 hours. The major metabolites are glucuronide and sulphate conjugates (>80%) which are excreted in urine.
