About this deal

One of the legends is about a young Spanish girl that had to flee Jamaica because of the colonial war. She was accompanied by her female servant Maria, who not only managed to bring some jewelry with them but also saved the family recipe for coffee liqueur. The bottle is white with the distinctive Tia Maria logo in the usual font however the colours of the label are much more natural, in muted greys and greens. The glass bottle has a tapered design and screw lid, so nice to hold and pour. We drank the match Tia Maria neat but it would probably be even tastier over ice. I’ve also seen that you can mix it with vodka, to take it up a level. I really can’t quite pin down what I think it tastes like, but one moment it tasted like sweets, the next mildly like parma violets. Having looked up more about the drink, the flavours of matcha green tea are herbal and floral which is probably why I was getting those hints of flavour. There is definitely a note of vanilla too, which all lends itself to a tasty creamy drink that goes down very smoothly. Confusingly, Kahlua seems very, very similar to Tia Maria, its vegan sister drink. We said earlier that we wished all items were as easy to categorise as Kahlua because we gave it a very simple “not vegan” label. However, given there are no obviously animal-derived ingredients, it seems sensible to consider why Kahlua is not for vegan dudes (and dudesses).

The drink is 17% volume so not strong, and therefore nice to sip slowly without being overpowering. I will definitely be finishing off this bottle and purchasing some more; I’m excited to have expanded my drinking repertoire a little, even though I genuinely thought I was going to hate it initially! I still don’t like the strange green colour, and discovered that it left my tongue green tinted too but I can overlook that for the taste. I’ll be recommending people try it before writing it off due to the name as to be honest, saying it is flavoured with matcha doesn’t suggest it is going to be very tasty. This is however a drink to get to know, and if you like cream liqueurs you won’t be disappointed. It would be a particularly good Mother’s Day gift for any lover of cream liqueur based drinks. So let's have a. look at the three most common stories you'll hear about the origin of the Jamaican coffee liqueur. The Story of Aunt Maria As well as the iconic original recipe, you’ll also discover Tia Maria’s newly launched matcha flavour here at House of Malt. Mixing naturally caffeinated Japanese matcha tea with indulgent cream, this green Tia Maria has a beautiful pastel colour and a unique, botanical taste you don’t want to miss. Our Master Roaster scours certified Arabica plantations looking for the ideal green coffee beans that will be blended together to achieve that unique coming-together of flavours used for Tia Maria production. We also source pure Bourbon vanilla extract, matured for at least three months to intensify its essence. Finally, we select Jamaica's richest White Overproof rum, distilled from sugarcane molasses and cultivated on plantations near the seaside. It is of crystal transparency, decisive, boasts hints of mature fruit and spices and gives Tia Maria its distinctive body and structure. The finished product undergoes a double filtration and is controlled once more before finally being bottled."This drink is so basic, but it’s so good. All you do is spike a cup of hot chocolate (as much or as little as you want) with Tia Maria. You’ll feel like a kid again, but there will be an adult secret indide: coffee liqueur! 7. Espresso Martini As a grainy powder with lots of flavour, matcha usually works best in drinks with texture, like sours made with egg white or aquafaba, or in creamy drinks that use a whole egg like flips or cream like an Alexander. How to make: SHAKE both ingredients with ice. Strain into chilled glass with matcha rim already in place. Neil Jardine, managing director of Disaronno International UK, said: “We are thrilled to be bringing a brand new liqueur to the UK drinks category and providing a delicious new take on Japanese Matcha tea. Matcha is extremely popular in coffee shops and is known around the world for its mindfulness properties, so it seemed a natural fit for us to pair the earthy notes and natural caffeine with our premium Tia Maria flavour. You can also use a food processor or stand mixer in place of the blender if desired. How to Fix a Mistake

Tia Maria is like Kahlua, but better! Take a sip and you’ll get a nuance in flavor that’s not present in the more straightforward Kahlua. Notes of caramel, citrus and vanilla swirl into the bittersweet coffee. It makes a killer Espresso Martini and a next-level White Russian. How much does it cost? Tia Maria Matcha will be available in 700ml bottles and will be launching in major supermarkets this summer. However, this story is most likely only part of a marketing campaign and not the true story of the beginning of the coffee liqueur. The Morris Cargill Version However, the recipe changed over time, as did the alcohol content. The original version contained 31.5% of alcohol, whereas t oday's version only contains 20%. Even the place of production changed. These days, the Jamaican coffee liqueur is produced in Italy and no longer in Jamaica. What's in Tia Maria? If you don't have a blender, let the ice cream thaw completely in the fridge (should take about 12-24 hours). Then whisk in the alcohol until completely incorporated.

Note: even though you use ice cream to make it, it is not a frozen drink. See the variation tips below or the recipe card for tips on how to turn this into a frozen drink. Ingredients Tia Maria is made from premium Jamaican coffee beans and a blend of Jamaican rum, vanilla, and sugar.
