About this deal

I first read this series when I was around 14 years old and struggling with my mental health, and in a lot of ways (as bad as that is) I reflect myself with Punpun's character. Masterpiece" is not a word often associated with the manga medium, but "Oyasumi Punpun" deserves to be called nothing less. Author Asano Inio has taken the comic story-telling format to its utmost potential with this 147 chapter powerhouse of despair. Asano's decision to depict Punpun Onodera--a day-dreaming, sensitive, innocent young boy who's exposed to despondent and abusive parents--as a simple, cute line drawing of a little bird, is a genius act of characterization. As we watch Punpun fumble through young life with the best intentions, only to have his spirits and hope crushed in the worst way imaginable, the audience is helplessly endeared to the adorable spindly bird. Unfortunately, Punpun's life isn't as simple as his line drawings, and he'll have to keep learning the hard way to hopefully find a shred of meaning in the cruel, unrelenting realm of morbid reality. Never have I felt such hopelessness reading a manga, or have I felt such pain for a particular character. The reader, much like many people in Punpun's life, stands by and cheers him on and hopes he'll pull through, but in the end, we're disappointed again and again. Our poor Punpun is a slave to his demons, and any reader will have a horrifying time as he tries his best to escape them.

In the elementary school years, Asano perfectly captures the innocence of childhood and the hopes and fears of growing up. It felt extremely nostalgic to me, and even reminded me of things about my own childhood that I had long forgotten. In the middle school years, we start seeing characters mature and realize that the world is not what they envisioned, that adults are not the perfect people they thought they were, and that love and puberty are confusing. In the high school years, Asano perfectly captures the angst and confusion of those years, from self-discovery to the pressures of the nearing adulthood to the sexual urges prevalent in those years. In the post-high school years, Asano explores darker themes, such as existentialism, depression, trauma, and one's place in the world; as well as relationships, sex, and work.Beveridge, Chris (March 2016). Oyasumi Punpun is about the pain of living. A violent hit of reality. It commits to painting life for the jumbled mess of feeling it is; happiness is fleeting, but so is everything else. It offers a uniquely human experience, profiling the life of Punpun Punyama from elementary school to young adulthood. Inio Asano carefully details every painful step along the way to comment on the very nature of our character. a b "Goodnight Punpun, Vol. 1". Viz Media. Archived from the original on September 26, 2016 . Retrieved October 14, 2016. I was attracted to Goodnight Punpun because of its titular character, Punpun, a small bird like creature wandering around a highly realistic world, dealing with an abusive family, depressed uncle and childhood love. Punpun is the centre of this world, and the character that I think most readers will empathise with most until, of course, the later volumes and want to follow, if not for his character, but for his visual appeal. The choice to represent the stories main character as a bird, a triangle, a horn headed monster, that constantly changes form is an interesting one, allowing the reader to infuse him with their own interpretations. It also reflects his own development and struggles. For example, he becomes a pyramid after loosing the last scrap of his childish humanity, a "normal" young man after completely "dying" and a monster when he embraces the darkness inside of him. Asano described the young Punpun as a fundamentalist, which leads to his regrets and dislike of gray areas later. Asano also ascribed these characteristics to the other characters: "The main characters in Punpun always remain children in the way their purity leads them to fail and become social misfits." At end of the manga, Asano was originally going to make Punpun die while saving a child of a friend, but he felt that it was too "clean" of an ending. He continued the theme of nothing going right for Punpun by making him live and by denying Punpun solitude after Aiko's death by pairing him up with Sachi. In the final chapter, Punpun's experiences are contrasted with those of his childhood friend Harumi to show Punpun from the perspective of a normal person. Harumi sees Punpun surrounded by friends, but in reality nothing went right for him, further emphasizing the theme of failure. [4]The publisher is unconvinced by Sachi and Punpun's manga, disliking the main character's "needless" depression. While Shishido gets badly injured after being mistaken for a shoplifter, and ends up paralyzed for life, Punpun's childhood friends Seki and Shimizu, who stayed very close, drift apart as Shimizu joins a cult led by the mysterious and exuberant Pegasus. Punpun, having distanced himself from Sachi who is now continuing the manga on her own, starts using a fake name and acting like a completely different person to shield himself from his depression, but ends up running into Aiko by chance.

Pardo, Jordi T. (October 30, 2016). "Ganadores Premios XXII Salón del Manga de Barcelona". Zona Negativa (in Spanish). Archived from the original on December 5, 2020 . Retrieved March 31, 2022. Punpun and Aiko visit Aiko's mother to announce to her that Aiko is leaving, but she reacts by stabbing Aiko's side with a knife. Trying to save her, Punpun fights Aiko's mother, and ends up strangling her to death, killing her on purpose. The two bury the body in the forest and leave the town to flee from the police, deciding to go to Kagoshima like they had promised each other when they were children. As they travel, they grow more hostile and resentful toward each other and become more depressed. As Aiko's injury worsens, she tries to puncture Punpun's eye with a fork, but only ends up giving him a minor injury. Meanwhile, Sachi becomes worried about Punpun's absence and starts searching for him. In terms of genres, Asano disliked the labeling of the manga as an utsumanga (depressing manga) or surreal, which he felt pigeonholed the manga. Since the manga was serialized in a seinen magazine, Asano created the manga for readers who could accept immorality rather than see the protagonist as a role model. [4] Release [ edit ] Mangas are tough for me. I like classics, and by that, I think Akira is the only one that’s really done it for me. Punpun was recommended to me by an acquaintance and I’ll be real, upon opening it up the first time I couldn’t stand the style in which the more manga-esque characters were drawn so I forgot about it. Fast forward to a few months later and I decided to turn around to face the manga wall and read something from there instead of another pathetic story about some male hopeless-romantic (my favorite genre—I use pathetic lightly).all in all. I loved the book, bought the whole series and I am able to proudly show it off to my friends. I would recommend this book to anyone who even shows the slightest of interest, since it is somewhat of a light read with a heavy impact. the thing I disliked the most is that it was too tragic for me. I could even say that I felt disgusted by the whole thing. but those are my personal feelings. in terms of the content and execution it is phenomenal. Where do you find meaning and who do you appoint as your guiding light? What if you you're the only one who sees that light?

For the most part, this manga reads like a first-person narrative even though technically it is not. It is almost autobiographical in nature if not for the focus shifts into other characters' lives and perspectives. Asano places such immaculate care into his wording and dialogue. It is evocative, emotional, and philosophical. It can also be funny, disturbing, crass, or surreal. Written and illustrated by Inio Asano, Goodnight Punpun was first serialized in Shogakukan's Weekly Young Sunday from March 15, 2007, [7] [8] until July 31, 2008, when the magazine ceased its publication. [9] It was then transferred to Weekly Big Comic Spirits, being published from October 20, 2008, [10] [11] to November 2, 2013. [12] [13] Shogakukan compiled the 147 chapters into thirteen volumes between August 3, 2007 [14] and December 27, 2013. [15] Some of these volumes have been sold as limited special editions with extras like: a phone strap, T-shirt, colored pencil set with figures, and lensless glasses. [16] Shogakukan (in Japanese). June 5, 2008. Archived from the original on July 30, 2013 . Retrieved July 25, 2015. One of Punpun's most striking aspects is how its characters decisions, even as little kids, hold a profound impact on who they are and how they live as adults. Characters obsess over promises they made from their childhood to the point it drives their very nature now. It's amazing how such a happy wish could feel like more of a curse. Of course, on the other side of things, this is also a wholly unreal world, a construction that is unraveling apart as Punpun changes form. The mad preacher, Pegasus, is a representative of this surreal side of things, a madman who holds seemingly godly power. In the end, though, even Pegasus cannot save humanity. His quest for "Good Vibrations" ultimately gets people killed, while the "Dark Spot", a representation of depression and anxiety that haunts Punpun and the wider world, remains living. Pegasus is the exact type of shamanic lunatic I like to see.
