That said, the Odyssey OLED G8 achieved 357 nits of HDR brightness across 10 percent of the display in our testing, which is fairly bright. And oh, that color! I just couldn’t stop playing when presented with such vibrant saturation. Last year in August we brought you detailsabout this emerging panel technology from Samsung, a rival to the common OLED panels produced by LG.Display and used across the OLED TV market. Samsung’s QD-OLED (Quantum Dot OLED) uses organic OLED material as the light source and Quantum Dot (QD) material as a film. It will be more similar to Samsung’s own AMOLED used for mobile phones and LG’s OLED TVs and will mark the company’s return to the OLED segment. There, you’ll find all the traditional controls plus two and 20-point white balance, gamma presets, color gamut options, color management and a few other tweaks. I didn’t have to calibrate the OLED G8, but I adjusted the Shadow Detail slider to fix a minor gamma error. You can select between the native color gamut which covers over 108% of DCI-P3 or Custom which selects sRGB for SDR content. Choosing Auto from this menu switches the color gamut automatically between SDR and HDR signals. I love the ultra wide set up. I know it's not for everyone, but I've wanted an ultra wide for a good while and I'm very happy with how it looks and feels.
If you have recently experienced issues with the Samsung Game Hub, where the Game Hub disappears from Samsung Home, or when attempting to run a game, or the error message “(app name) has been terminated and is no longer available” displays, please do not be concerned. Samsung is aware of the issue and have begun taking steps to resolve the problem. After firmware update 1442, the EOTF follows the target curve well until there's a slow roll-off at the peak brightness, meaning it preserves details well in bright scenes, and it performs the same whether you have HDR10+ Gaming set to 'Basic' or 'Advanced'. Before the update, the EOTF was similar, but the roll-off happened earlier. There's also a separate setting called Game HDR that boosts the EOTF when enabled, as you can see here. While firmware 1442 improved the EOTF, it didn't change the monitor's peak brightness. For the best HDR results on the Samsung Odyssey OLED G8, we recommend using the ‘Custom’ Picture Mode and making sure ‘Game Mode’ and ‘Peak Brightness’ options are enabled. ‘Game HDR’ should be disabled and ‘HDR10+ Gaming’ set to ‘Advanced.’ However, if you work with a lot of text, you might find it bothersome. You can use Better ClearType and Mac/FreeType to alleviate this issue in some applications. Gaming was incredibly addictive. The Samsung OLED G8, like all OLEDs, has next-level video processing with no need for overdrive or strobing to achieve perfect motion resolution. Whether viewing Blur Busters test patterns or mowing through monsters in Doom Eternal, the screen responded instantly to control inputs and detail in both near and far views remained razor sharp. This is enhanced by the panel’s tremendous contrast which makes rendered objects look truly three-dimensional.
Added the LG 45GR65DC and 45GR75DC 44.5″ 5120×1440 200Hz super-ultrawide curved VA gaming monitors. How does that compare to other gaming monitors? In its Standard mode, the AW3423DWF covered 180% of the sRGB color gamut and 127% of the DCI-P3 gamut, with a Delta-E value of 0.24. The Predator X32 FP’s display achieved 226% of the sRGB color gamut and 160% of the DCI-P3 color gamut, with a Delta-E value of 0.26. In short, the Odyssey OLED G8’s brightness and color accuracy aren’t far off from the competition. The ultra-wide, QHD resolution (3,440 x 1,440) gaming monitor has a 21:9 aspect ratio with 100% color volume and DCI-99.3% color gamut for incredible visuals regardless of the game being played. This is enhanced by a million-to-one static contrast ratio to bring out the most subtle details for enhanced immersion and 1800R curvature for the perfect playing view.
