The nuts and bolts of their criminal empire are explained in detail both in what they did and how they did it. When they were accused of crimes, in the early days before Ronnie’s features started thickening, they confounded eye witnesses by simply asking them which one of us did it. Throughout the late 1950s and early 60s, the Krays were carving out their reputation – sometimes literally – which they used both to make money and win attention. Bailey’s famous image appears tattooed onto a man’s calf in another of his portraits, currently on display at the Scottish National Gallery in Edinburgh.

The Profession of Violence: The Rise and Fall of the Kray Twins The Profession of Violence: The Rise and Fall of the Kray Twins

We were working on it from three years ago, well before Legend was announced,” said their producer Craig Tuohy, whose own connection with the twins is that his parents met at one of their clubs. In the Littledean Jail museum in Gloucestershire, the Crime Through Time exhibition carries a range of Krays weaponry. Here we have their full biographical story, the nature of their crimes and an examination as to their enduring fascination and indeed the beatification of them. Pearson also wrote "true-crime" biographies, such as The Profession of Violence: an East End gang story about the rise and fall of the Kray twins. Many of the stories about the Krays inside were paid for by the newspapers, the money either going to the brothers and their representatives in the outside world, or to prison officers and fellow prisoners who would sell information about them behind their backs. This is a minor point but one that should be pointed out to anybody that might want to learn the full story of the Kray Twins and their gangland empire. Much more cerebral and wise- when compared with his twin brother, for he is otherwise a mobster- Reggie is the preferred partner. I finished this in a day, after deciding I was finally going to pick it up and read it beyond the first ten pages detailing their childhood, and was glad to have done so. They were a strong and powerful force that made men bigger, stronger, and smarter reluctant to tangle with them. I'm not sure how much of the detail in this book was true, but it was fascinating (in a macabre way) and disturbing how ruthless / viscous individuals can prosper through fear.

Krays: The Final Word by James Morton | Goodreads

They may have been failures as professional criminals, but by the time they were sentenced to life in prison at the age of 35, their brand was already a phenomenal success. In terms of a biography, the story of the Kray twins is pretty interesting, although what I found most fascinating was the relationship between them and how this affected them, and each of their lives individually. Amazing to think how strong and formidable they became kind of like pre disposition, the right/wrong place at the right time. However, while I sadly didn’t learn anything substantially new, I did like the unbiased writing, in that many of the previous books I’ve read on the Krays was either written/ghostwritten by themselves or by associates or members of their extended family/friends. Although the canonical nature of this book has been debated by Bond fans since it was published, it was officially authorised by Glidrose Publications, the official publisher of the James Bond chronicles. It is it an impressively written work following the rise and fall of the Kray twins, what really works for me is the level of detail and understanding of the subject. that forceful personality,” Maureen Flanagan said when we met in July at her home near Broadway Market in Hackney, east London.Numerous books, films and television shows have been devoted to them over the years and their haunts are on the East End tourist trail. It was astonishing reading how two working class boys from the East End rose through the ranks to become two of the most powerful men in Britain. I grew up in London surrounded by Krays ‘mythology’ so I have to say the idea that the author has written a ‘final’ version of their story had me intrigued.
