About this deal

Added to all this, David’s books have achieved unprecedented critical acclaim: Awful Auntie, Ratburger and Demon Dentist won the National Book Awards Children’s Book of the Year and in France David was awarded the popular Tamtam for Mr Stink and the prestigious Le Prix Du Livre De La Jeunesse for Ratburger, so it comes as no surprise that countless broadsheet reviewers have compared David to his all-time hero, Roald Dahl.

In Chapter 5 there is a timetable for ‘granny’s hectic life’. Could you create a new, more exciting timetable with lots of different activities at various times each day? Could you make up some questions for others to answer about your timetable (e.g. How long does a particular activity last?)? Their journey in crime is extremely entertaining, especially when they met the Queen. The language is conversational so it is easy to get swept along in the narrative but sufficiently peppered with vocabulary that could challenge years 3 or 4 in some places. Raj tries to sell some Cornettos with a Best Before date of 15th November 1996. Find out what might happen to food after their best-before dates. How do we keep different types of food fresh for as long as possible? Choose a person that you know (or a made-up character) and think of different secrets that they might have. Can you write a story about this? Ben and Granny play Scrabble together. Ask a friend to give you a random selection of letters and see how many words you can make using them.

Gangsta Granny \"In fairness to the boy she does stink of cabbage,\" agreed Mum, as she applied some last minute lip-liner. \"You're not helping, wife,\" muttered Dad. \"At worst my mother has a very slight odour of boiled vegetables.\" \"Can't I come with you?\" pleaded Ben. \"I love ball-whatsit dancing,\" he lied. \"It's called ballroom dancing,\" corrected Dad. \"And you don't love it. You said, and I quote, 'I would rather eat my own bogeys than watch that rubbish'.\" Now, Ben's mum and dad loved ballroom dancing. Sometimes Ben thought they loved it more than they loved him. There was a TV show on Saturday evenings that Mum and Dad never missed called Strictly Stars Dancing, where celebrities would be paired with professional ballroom dancers. 12 Cabbagy Water In fact, if there was a fire in their house, and Mum could only save either a sparkly gold tap-shoe once worn by Flavio Flavioli (the shiny, tanned dancer and heartbreaker from Italy who appeared on every series of the hit TV show) or her only child, Ben thought she would probably go for the shoe. Tonight, his mum and dad were going to an arena to see Strictly Stars Dancing live on stage. \"I don't know why you don't give up on this pipe dream of becoming a plumber, Ben, and think about dancing professionally,\" said Mum, her lip-liner scrawling across her cheek as the car bounced over a particularly bumpy speed bump. Mum had a habit of applying make-up in the car, which meant she often arrived somewhere looking like a clown. \"Maybe, just maybe, you could end up on Strictly!\" added Mum excitedly. 13 Find out about different types of dances, e.g. tango, ballroom, and rumba. What makes them different? I thought that the writing was along the lines of Roald Dahl, however unlike Dahl's writing there was a moral to this story, which surprised me a little bearing in mind David Walliams' comedy! I would give a word of warning that there is quite a sad event in this book, which may be a little upsetting for more sensitive children. Some characters, like Granny in ‘Gangsta Granny’ for example, can have characteristics that are unexpected. This makes the story even more exciting! Here is an example of a character description of Mr Parker from the story ‘Gangsta Granny’:

This was a read which both my children enjoyed. There were a few gross references, to breaking wind mostly, which are always a winner with children. It's a good book to read aloud, but be prepared to do some voices, because it works much better if you're willing to put some effort into it! Mr Parker has a very large nose and wears dark clothing, a distinctive pork-pie hat and a bow tie. He is an irritating and extremely nosy man who uses binoculars to spy on his neighbours. When he speaks, Mr Parker has a nasal voice which can sound rather annoying.” He goes home and now can't wait to see his grandma again to find out about these jewels. But when his dad rings Granny up, she says she's too busy that evening to have Ben sleep over. One day, Ben calls his parents at Granny's house and asks them to take him home. Mum and Dad ignore Ben and disapprove of the proposal. Granny somehow overhears the conversation due to the indistinct sound made by Ben while he was talking. The next morning, his Granny seems somewhat upset and disappointed thinking that her grandson doesn't love her.Mystery and Wonder 3) Squeeze a t-,:yyoamuroufnintgeorf toothpa5te on a nd place fi, nger in mouth . /1,/ 4j Move th e tr ace of toothpaste a round your /4/ -;____ \\,·( f(i C: ·1']\"\" ; ) mouth with your tongue 6) Turn off th e t ap 43 I read this as a bedtime story over a few nights with my children, aged 5 and 8. Ben thinks his granny is a boring old lady, who only likes playing scrabble and eating cabbage but he's about to find out that he has under appreciated Granny. Could she possibly be a gangster? Or even a gangsta?! Using the story ‘Gangsta Granny’ as a hook, children are sure to feel excited and engaged in their learning. You could begin your lesson using the informative PowerPoint, which introduces learners to the process of writing character descriptions. As well as being a No.1 best-selling Children’s author, David Walliams is one of Britain's most popular writers and comic actors. Look at the graph of told-offness in Chapter 27. Could you make your own graph about a similar topic?
