This generational historical fiction had the potential to be one of the best novels I’ve ever read. However, a common issue with most debuts is the author biting off more than they can chew and/or failing to execute in the final chapters to tie everything together. That makes this review challenging to write because Dave Henry, Louisa, Abigail and Winter are characters I will never forget. The resolve they had in the midst of struggle fueled their will to live and protect what is theirs. As vivid as these characters were and the diligent research done to provide historical facts and context, the link between the MC’s Margot, Abigail, and Gaelle was a disappointment. I think the story of Gaelle, our present day character, could have been left out of the book. It seemed a bit extraneous and didn’t really add anything to the story. It seemed like she was just a bit haphazardly thrown in there. I think the story would’ve had a much smoother flow if her chapters had been omitted. One of the other things I had a hard time with was how long the book seemed. It seemed like there were a lot of things and events that were included that didn’t necessarily have to be. It just made the story a bit long-winded. In memory of Sue, who’s amazing spirit and love of life touched us all. There will never be another like her.It also doesn’t have to be particularly long. You don’t need to write a story or paragraphs. Just a few sentences is more than enough. If you enjoyed Ta-Nehisi' The Water Dancer, for its fantasy aspects, then Remembrance has some of its own. I'm sure getting to combustible levels will appeal to you in some way. It was actually pretty cool.
