About this deal

As for the output level, these speakers can get seriously loud. What’s somewhat surprising considering the price is that they don’t distort even at higher output volumes. The sound quality remains undistorted and smooth, although the balance will shift towards the upper end of the frequency spectrum. For music production and mixing, it is recommended to use lower volumes. There is no real difference here in the quality, but both are rigid enough to prevent any unwanted resonance.

The speakers are well built with study cabinets and the right weight to sit well on the surface. Like the R1700BT, the casing is made from MDF wood, which can minimize resonance than plastic material. My first impression was that I really liked the design, they fit in almost any environment, except perhaps really old school cottages. A strange comparison, but I have reviewed a pair of Edifiers in an old cottage before over at Fullsync. It’s such a shame that these are just loan units, as I didn’t want to let them go. They’re really really good and when the sun is shining, the BBQ is on there is little else you’d need, other than a good sound system and the Edifier R1850DB’s hit the nail on the head. The angular cabinet shape and included removable grills allow for flexible positioning either horizontally or vertically, but vertically is recommended for the best performance.

The Sound

Another notable feature is the multiple functions on the volume control dial. Besides increasing or lowering the volume levels, you can push the dial to switch between wired and wireless input sources. Also, press and hold the dial to initiate a Bluetooth connection. While the R1700BT provides incredible value, the R1850DB’s extra connectivity, sleek design, and subtle but noticeable audio improvements are worth the very little extra.

As with most bookshelf speakers they are a decent small to medium size and will fit on just about any shelf or ledge, as the name would suggest! While both models have satisfying tactile buttons and knobs, the added connectivity of the R1850DB and upgradability make it the winner here. These speakers are best budget-to-mid set of speakers for those looking for that high-quality music experience in India. You will certainly not be disappointed with these speakers but an addition of a sub-woofer will make you feel complete. I feel like I’m doing the R1700BT an injustice here because its an absolutely fantastic speaker, but the R1850DB is just that little bit better with the controls. The increased loudness capability gives a more usable headroom for larger spaces than the more compact R1700BT. Sound Quality Winner: Edifier R1850DB

For simple use and if you don’t plan to use a subwoofer, the R1700BT gives you premium sound on a budget. The bass reflex ports have been moved to the front to allow for more flexible positioning without sacrificing any bass response.

A two-speaker system with excellent sound and build quality.

And it hit me. The Edifiers have a Bass control. So what I did was turn the Bass knob way down. Not all the way, but maybe 80%. Maybe I'm crazy, but it's a fact that filter networks introduce their own phase distortions and somewhere in my silly head, my notion is that the phase distortions get logarithmically worse the more you engage the network, so I don't want to push it to its limits where things probably get really nasty. The R1850DB’s small but smart improvements across the frequency range, especially when it comes to the bass and mids, result in a more refined and complete listening experience compared to the R1700BT. The speakers are not wireless between each other. You do need to attach the included cable to make them work together but the main speaker will work independently if not connected to the control unit.
