About this deal

Heartburn--her novel, a BARELY-fictionalized version of her divorce from Carl Bernstein--was also excellent, and now I intend to hunt down the Meryl Streep/Jack Nicholson movie. Ephron received a Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay losing to Jane Campion for The Piano (1993). In the essay “About Having People to Dinner” she shares her dinner party secrets, including “It is absolutely essential to have a round table. Her last books I Feel Bad About My Neck and I Remember Nothing were both huge international bestsellers. I'd never even heard of the play Lucky Guy but it was a well-written piece about the importance of journalism.

But the revelation of this collection may be her early work, for those who haven’t read it — or haven’t read it for years. Reading nearly 600 pages of Ephron in one volume is a joy, not only due to the range of her interests, her capacious mind, her mixture of humor and satire and self-deprecation, but also her skill as a stylist. that somewhere out there is a mouseburger who doesn’t realize she has the capability of becoming anything, anything at all, anything she wants to, of becoming Helen Gurley Brown, for God’s sake. They spent night after night getting drunk as Bill Loud recited the intimate sexual details of his infidelities. With her characteristic dry humor and accessible voice, Roberts’ reflections on life as a woman of a certain age are both hilarious and relatable. The Blogger follows with twenty-four posts and is, as the genre demands, fairly conversational in tone. After graduating from Wellesley, Ephron worked briefly as an intern in the White House of President John F.

To Ephron, close reading, even when it finds the subject sorely wanting, is the very foundation of romance. She then directed the comedy fantasy film Michael (1996) starring John Travolta, Andie MacDowell and William Hurt. An impressive anthology of Ephron's works, showcasing (if it's possible to do both these things at the same time) both her versatility and her consistent, distinctive voice. What made Ephron great was that she took the very things seriously that others dismissed as frivolous, Cosmopolitan, Teflon, breast size, and, most of all, herself. More recently, she revived her mixed feelings about old journalism in the play “Lucky Guy,” which is in the collection.
