About this deal

Loud, clear speaker – The built-in speaker provides clear, loud audio output, especially combined with this unit’s signal processing features. Can get hot – When transmitting at more than 70 watts for a prolonged period of time, the radio tends to heat up quite a bit.

PS, I am a Yorkshire man by birth so I have a built in adversity to spending money, particularly my money! Out of this wide array of options, I’ve only explored Digital Noise Reduction and the Narrow IF filter so far, as they offer fairly immediate gains without too much configuration. This radio is well recommended to anyone searching for a good reliable transmitter (mine does 94 Watts out on SSB from the box) and a good performing receiver (better than my old TS-480hx). After some extensive transmitting periods it gets warm to the touch, but not too warm, nothing to worry about. I use it on ssb with an antlion modmic and get nothing but good audio reports (once the TX equalizer is set to maximum performance). The combined list of favourites and the 150kHz stepping stone frequencies resulted in 70 memory channels in total. As I wanted to apply alphanumeric tags to those channels, and didn’t relish the prospect of entering them manually, my next port of call was the CAT control manual to see how those memories could be set programmatically. Regarding the close in dynamic range, once upon a time I had a TS520. That has a measured Dynamic Range of 52dB. It had the worst RX I have ever owned. By comparison, at home I use a TenTec Orion II. This rig has a measured close in Dynamic range of 95dB. In comparison tests on busy frequencies it is chalk and cheese with the FT857.Stellar signal quality – This radio uses Yaesu’s bit floating point Digital Signal Processing (DSP) for crystal clear audio quality. The FT-891 provides a stable 100 W (25 W AM) high power output. High reliability is assured by the transmitter careful circuit design with efficient thermostatically-controlled dual internal fans and the diecast chassis.

I love the audio from the FT-891 it sounds so much better than my IC-7300 which is fatiguing to listen to after a while, it seems to have a high noise floor and harshness to the audio and yes NR does help but on the 891 I don’t need to use the NR like I do on the 7300. The filters on the 891 are better too with less bleed over from closer stronger stations and I don’t notice any overloading at all compared to the 7300 which means I have to always play with the RF gain. SCU-17 USB Interface Unit Instruction Manual rev. 2018– Instructions to install the USB driver software – follow directions before plugging radio to computer The FT-991 is designed for the most competitive operating situations, with a suite of new features to enhance the experience. Whether you primarily operate at home, mobile or in the field, the FT-991 will provide outstanding fundamental performance plus give you easy access to the full range Now, go to WSJT-X and verify that signal levels coming in are being heard, and at a level that the software can use. This is shown by the audio level indicator at the bottom left of the screen. The audio level is indicated by a vertical bar. You want the signal at most to be at 80%, lowest around 30%. Adjust your computer microphone level (for the soundcard you are using) until you achieve the audio level needed. Most issues that people list as problems can be worked around with tools or updating your operating skills with operation time. Integration with a computer works very well, but it would have been nicer if the audio could have been included to reduce the cable complexity. The New FT-991A now includes a high-resolution full color 3.5" TFT Touch panel for superior operability and visibility, incorporating a High Speed Spectrum and High Resolution real-time scope with ASC (Automatic Spectrum-scope control) built right in. While this audio profile may not be to everyone’s taste, the extra sparkle yields voice audio that is clear and distinct. I find those low frequencies make the audio muddy and tiring to listen over long periods, so I’m quite happy with this.

I love the 7300, the screen is it's main feature, seeing the waterfall is nice but to be honest the DNR is so good on the 891 I'm half thinking of selling the 7300 for a FTDX-3000. Next, comes a very odd misnomer. The FT-891 is listed as eating 2 amps on receive, in Yaesu specifications. This scared away portable buyers, and was the source of many negative posts by hams who were waiting for an updated FT-857, yet had never actually tried the new radio. I have no idea why Yaesu claims this high number on receive, because they are incorrect (scroll to the bottom of this article, or search Youtube, for actual tested current draw numbers). The FT-891 listens comfortably at 1 amp. The operating voltage should be maintained between 11.73 volts and 15.87 volts. Otherwise the radio could be damaged. Note that SLED batteries can drop below the required 11.73 volts during the operating cycle of the battery, so I only use LiFePO4 batteries to maintain a higher voltage for more of the operating voltage range of the battery. My favorite value battery at this time is the Miady LFP16AH 12V 20Ah Deep Cycle LiFePO4 (link). I also recommend using a Power Analyzer such as this one (link) while operating off of a battery. It gives indication of the voltage as you are transmitting, so it’s much easier to monitor the level. So since the '706 I've been using older rigs that I restored. Lately an FT-707 and a set of Drake's - R-7 and TR-7. This review will cover every negative of the FT-891 I have noticed, but keep in mind that I feel it's a decent value, and the most performance you're going to find at this price-point. Some will want to tear this radio apart, because it's not the second coming of the FT-857, or because some test lab stats aren't absolute perfection, but in my experience, this radio is cheap way to get some decent performance.I have the Tecsun PL-990x, which sounds absolutely horrible on SSB meaning ECSS is impossible, + like the 7300 the audio from the PL-990x “on SSB” is harsh on the ears and it seems to be related to DSP processing, can’t beat that analogue sound + the DSP portables have a distortion to audio on SSB which is not nice to listen to, The Tecsun PL-680 on the other hand sounds much better but best of all is the FT-891, it’s a really super radio, of course it’s not as portable as the 990x but the newer PL-330 actually sounds better than the PL-990x because the 4 Khz filter actually works, it doesn’t on the 990x,880 or S-8800 but the PL-330 still has that distortion on SSB. PTT Method should be set to RTS, and the Port changed to the COM port for the Standard COM port in device manager. I added a Behringer xm8500 mic, and a homebrew patch cable, and my audio showed dramatic improvement -- but I eventually figured out good enough settings for the hand mic that I do not bother (see my other settings article on this blog). Please pay attention to the ALC, however. Keep it peaking at midpoint. Set it too high, and your signal will appear louder on the meter, but you might splatter.
