About this deal

So.............we're doing novel study in our class. And I finished this with two periods (or three?) when I was *guilty smile* NOT supposed to. *nervously laughs--heh heh heh* The setting of my book is school & grades in school I know this because the story takes place in school when he was in different grades during his life. The major events of the book where when he was growing and found out he was different from the other people in his school until he found somebody that was weird like him. Its person vs. person because Zinkoff tries to become friends with other people but they reject him because he's weird and different than everybody else. Weird is the theme because he is very different and weirder than everybody else. Basing my observations on Stargirl and Love, Stargirl, and now, Loser, Mr. Jerry Spenelli has a craft in writing characters that are unconventional and unique persons who don't usually follow conformity. His characters have their own individuality, with the innate nature to be different from others. Zinkoff, although dubbed as "loser" by his classmates, is somewhat oblivious of his new name. He doesn't really care. He is being his real self, and that is what truly matters for him and for the people that care for him. The musical genius of Glenn Gould, the pinnacle of art, is what serves as the reference defining all three of their lives. Werthemier - the titular Loser - finds himself woefully dwarfed by the perfection of Gould as a piano artist. The frustration of recognizing his worthlessness and knowing that he will never be able to reach the top leads him to give up his piano career. And this failure haunts him for the rest of his life. In his bitter obsession, he gradually advances on a path of self-destruction. The manner in which he commits suicide comes as a last-ditch effort to do something on his own terms, a desperate act of rebel against his life of failure.

The title relates with the book "Loser" because Zinkoff the main character is supposedly a loser because he is different and has no friend do people consider him as a loser because in the text it says "He doesn't know he's not like everybody else"which makes him a loser. The major event of the story was when he finally realized he was not like everybody else so then he tried to change because he didn't have any friends because of his weirdness.

Reviews

In most of his fictions—including this novella—the Austrian Thomas Bernhard insults everything Austrian. In fact, Bernhard declared in his will that every one of his literary works in perpetuity must not be printed or presented within the state of Austria, or within the geographical boundaries of the present state of Austria, whatever that area may in the future be called. Yet he never made an attempt to emigrate; he lived in Austria all his life. Here it is Bach's Goldberg variations, played by Glenn Gould, that provides as it were the basso continuo for Bernhard's own deliberately droning repetitions and variations. With the monologistic, uninterrupted flow of its sentences, the novel conjures up the image of a singer fighting to sustain his breath to the end of an impossibly long, embellished aria." She herself had never had enough money and never enough time and hadn’t even been unhappy once, in contrast to those she called refined gentlemen, who always had enough money and enough time and constantly talked about their unhappiness. ” Goods that by reason of their nature, cannot be returned - (Items such as underwear, where the 'hygiene patch' has been removed, or cosmetics where the seal has been broken).Loser is slightly better than Schooled in that the teasing is not as obvivous and Don is written to be that clueless. However it is hard to be in sympathy with such a clueless character. The action of the plot is also more believeable. The novel ends with an interesting afterword that throws some light on Bernhard's life and his writing. His later novels, including The Loser, contain characters which carry an image of the author in themselves. In the present case, Gould is meant to be doppelganger for Bernhard. Bernhard having studied music, his writing has been informed by music as well. The afterword compares his writing to Gould's music: When he begins first grade, Zinkoff is oblivious to his flaws and weaknesses. He remains positive and enthusiastic when others might be embarrassed. Zinkoff possesses an inner joy that baffles most people. He’s not smart or athletic, and the other kids know it. He is so excited to start school that he can barely stop laughing, which his classmates think is weird. Miss Meeks, his teacher, worries that he is a troublemaker. But she finds Zinkoff is polite and obliging whenever she suggests he change his behavior.
