This remarkable Symphony is a personal favourite of mine – Elgar at the height of his powers. At the top of my list of recommendations is The Faber Interview, our series of profiles of Faber writers that focus as much on their publishing history as their newest title. This year, Max Liu shone a light on the remarkable Booker long-listed author Francis Spufford and Orhan Pamuk (pictured) spoke to Boyd Tonkin ahead of the publication of Nights of Plague, one of the biggest books of the year. An extra writer-on-writer piece came in the form of a brilliant essay from Nicola Upson about her crime series featuring a fictionalised version of classic crime fiction writer Josephine Tey. I like short stories. I read this in translation, with wonderful woodcut illustrations. It reads like a narrative poem and is a wonderful evocation of a shepherd’s love for his sheep, and for the welfare of the land. It has become to me over the years an ever more powerful reminder of how we must tread softly on this Earth, replenish it and love it. The more difficult and irascible a man is, the cleverer, and the cleverer the better: that was the logic we imbibed. The world revolves and jumps around such clever men, and it’s a kind of thrill to come up against it, to be able to prove, if I’m good at anything, how good I am at appeasing them. It’s in my blood. And I’d been able to watch Mum all those years, to listen and learn from her mistakes, who tried her best but didn’t seem particularly good at it.
