About this deal

In this book children may begin to think of the value of friendship and family, identity and diversity, as well as being true to oneself. David McKee's comical fable about everyone’s favourite patchwork elephant teaches little readers to be themselves and celebrates the power of laughter.

He could quickly see the elephant shape on the cover, (although at first glance to me it looked like an abstract pattern). In the early part of his career, McKee regularly drew and sold humorous drawings to magazines and newspapers such as The Times Educational Supplement, Punch and the Reader’s Digest. Following their happy reunion, the elephants reassure Elmer that they love him because of his differences, and not in spite of them, and they celebrate by painting themselves in multicoloured paint (and Elmer paints himself grey), in recognition of Elmer's unique appearance and personality.

The perfect introduction to the world of Elmer and his colourful elephant friends for the youngest of children.

After being cooped up in a cave with his herd, he longs for a bit of fresh air and some peace and quiet. Little readers love the fantastic book, which helps them learn that it’s ok to be different, just like Elmer. The illustrations, are basic but beautiful and Elma’s patchwork colours were the biggest selling point for my daughter when she was younger than one, but then gradually becoming more interested in the other elephants and animals as she grew up.

On leaving college he drew regularly for, among others, Punch , Reader’s Digest , and The Times Educational Supplement . David McKee's colourful depiction of differences through the story of Elmer can provide and important learning curve for children. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.

In particular my year one class love the picture where it’s raining and all the elephants are laughing and enjoying themselves and Elmer’s patchwork is revealed. Registered office address: Unit 34 Vulcan House Business Centre, Vulcan Road, Leicester, Leicestershire, LE5 3EF.These books are the perfect size for little hands to explore themselves making them feel independent whilst improving fine motor skills and encouraging a love of books. Since then there have been numerous Elmer books, a wide range of merchandise and a TV series, with the latest Elmer book being released as recently as 2016. Aided and abetted by his ventriloquist cousin, Wilbur, Elmer pretends to be blown away on the windiest day. However Elmer did not want to be different to the other elephants as they laughed at him, so he tried to make himself ‘elephant colour’ like the others.
