About this deal

I’m afraid that it is.’ Glokta treated the assembly to his toothless leer. ‘Arch Lector Sult is most concerned. He has asked me to look into the disappearance of Superior Davoust, and also to examine the city’s defences. To examine them carefully, and to ensure that the Gurkish stay on the other side of them. He has instructed me to use whatever measures I deem necessary.’ He gave a significant pause. ‘Whatever … measures.’

A reference to the words that Louis XIV had inscribed on his cannons: " Ultima Ratio Regum," which is Latin for "the last argument of kings." Harker’s frown grew more surly yet. ‘We’ve always managed.’ Oh, indeed. Apart from mislaying your Superior, of course. ‘This is your first visit to Dagoska?’ All in all, after having read it like four times by now, Before they are Hanged is a spectacular book. Unfortunately, it's aura is slightly dimmed by the fact that most of First Law matches it almost blow for blow. Glokta: Very well, Practical Vitari, if you really can't resist me. You'll have to go on top though, if you don't mind. You will take ship immediately, and assume command of the Inquisition in the city of Dagoska. You will establish what became of your predecessor, Superior Davoust. You will investigate his suspicion that a conspiracy is afoot, perhaps in the city’s ruling council itself. You will examine the members of that council, and uproot any and all disloyalty. Punish treason with scant mercy, but ensure that your evidence is sound. We can afford no further blunders.Plot: With the heavy lifting of getting the characters (some of them) together done in book 1, Abercrombie tightens the narrative. The three main storylines are woven together seamlessly. Each chapter, be it West in the North Glokta in Dagoska, or Bayaz and co adventuring together, is irresistible. The Bayaz plot is just fun to read for the character interactions and the fight scenes, Gloktas storyline works because of the mystery involved and the constant tension of the city falling to the Gurkish, and the Angland scenes provide the large scale battles and introspective looks into dogman and West.

However, I’m not going to sit here and write that I didn’t enjoy the story that I read. Due to the interesting characters, their deep personalities and the interactions they have with one another, I found myself more engrossed in their goings-ones and happenings than I did in the first book. The second book in the series continues to follow the six point-of-view characters established in the first book, in three parallel arenas. The year is 575 and in the north, Colonel Collem West and the Dogman find themselves allies as the Union Army face Bethod’s rampaging army in Angland. In the south, Glokta is sent across the sea to help fortify the besieged city of Dagoska against the Gurkish. And finally in the west, Logen Ninefingers, Jezal dan Luthar and Ferro Maljinn follow the ancient First of the Magi on his journey through the wild Old Empire to the Edge of the World. And Bayaz, the First of the Magi, is leading a party of bold adventurers on a perilous mission through the ruins of the past. The most hated woman in the South, the most feared man in the North, and the most selfish boy in the Union make a strange alliance, but a deadly one. They might even stand a chance of saving mankind from the Eaters. If they didn’t hate each other quite so much. Grobar, Matt (30 May 2023).
