About this deal

The cheapest options will often skimp on these minor details but they do matter. There is nothing worse than a steamer with a hose and power lead which is too short. This steamer has no “on” light – so don’t assume it’s not working once you’ve filled it and switched it on. If the walls have been painted originally you’ll find the paper will loosen much more readily than if it is just bare plaster – as this will absorb quite a lot of water before you see any effect. The wallpaper steamer itself is relatively easy to use, however working the steamer is only one part of removing the wallpaper from your walls. Read on to find out the best way to start this redecorating process!

Stripping wallpaper is a job no one enjoys but the results are often well worth it. A steam stripper can save a lot of time but are they worth the money and which is the best option? If you can’t avoid using an extension then adding an RCD device is essential and, also, be careful not to have cables trailing on the floor which present a trip-hazard. SAFETY TIP: Many would suggest merely adding an extension lead to your power cable, however this is most definitely not advisable when using a wallpaper steamer. Due to the tank of water, and the water droplets that can drip out of the plate, this could lead to a blown fuse – or worse! Safety Features This also applies to the actual steam plate. These don’t vary greatly in size, but they do vary! Obviously the larger the plate of the steamer the larger space that can be steamed at once, which will speed up the process. This is often due to a build of limescale sitting on the heating element (preventing the element from heating the water and causing problems with temperature regulation). What Should I Look For In A Wallpaper Steamer?Quality of each component will affect the price but a cheap machine will often be just as effective as the expensive alternative. When deciding which model to buy you’ll need to consider the following: You can make the job even easier by investing in one or two handy tools to compliment your steamer: Centurion 90239 500ml Flask Wallpaper Stripper Features: When you steamer has cooled down, drain any water in the tank and wash everything thoroughly with warm soapy water. At this point you are ready to start using your wallpaper steamer! You will know when your wallpaper steamer is ready to use as steam will be pouring out of the plate! It is always better to start at the base of the wall, so choose a point to start and hold the plate against the bottom corner of the wall until signs of damp start to appear. At this point move the plate across to the next patch and repeat. If you feel able to – or if there are two of you removing the wallpaper – it is a good idea to have one person using the stripper blade to work on the newly damp patch of wallpaper, while the plate is steaming the next patch. This allows the process to be smoother and avoids patches of the wall starting to dry out again before you get chance to strip them! Or how about the Earlex SS77 Steam Wallpaper Stripper? This versatile tool can remove all sorts of wall coverings, from multiple layers to painted over paper and difficult to shift Artex.

We should also give a mention to our other Earlex product on the list – the Earlex SS125UKP Warrior Wallpaper Stripper. We like that this handy tool combines natty safety features with a user-friendly design.Once you have moved along the base of one sheet of wallpaper, start to move up the wall until that whole sheet is removed. Then simply continue this process until you have removed all of the wallpaper. Independent: We will tell you exactly what we think of a product and we would never recommend anything we wouldn't use ourselves.

As with the length of the hose, the same applies to the length of the power cable. Although the length of the power cables do vary, we have not yet found a model that would not be sufficient for purpose. Although, it always makes sense to buy a model with a longer cable if this is available to you. The longer the cable the further you will be able to steam before needing to unplug and move to another location – risking having to then reheat the the tank. Once ready, start at the bottom of the wall and hold the steam plate against the wallpaper. Hold the steamer in place for up between 10 and 60 seconds to allow the steam to saturate the paper (you should notice signs of damp) and then remove the plate. The length of the hose that you are using might seem like a very unimportant thing but if you have a room with particularly tall walls, then you could find yourself struggling to reach the top while the water tank is still on the floor (this can particularly be the case for stairs and landing spaces). As if redecorating wasn’t hard enough – the last thing you need is to be having to carry the tank of water AND steam the wall. Allow the tank to cool for a few moments before refilling. Although this will mean that the tank will take longer to reheat the water, it avoids the risk of any burns to yourself. Never let the water in the tank pass the minimum water level – this can cause damage to the wallpaper steamer, and will not be covered on the warranty if it should break.A wide, flexible stripping blade will usually be the most effective although you may need a narrow stripping knife for awkward areas. Once you have finished using your wallpaper steamer, make sure to wait until it has cooled down before emptying the tank! Always consider the wattage of different makes before purchasing a wallpaper steamer. The less power the longer it will take for your tank of water to warm up and send steam up the hose. This can be incredibly frustrating if you are wanting to get started immediately! How To Use A Wallpaper Steamer Remove electrical fittings from the wall and cover with a plastic bag to protect from steam and water. So, we’ve given you a rundown of five of the best wallpaper steamers in the UK, and we’ve hopefully given you some food for thought in terms of whether it’s worth investing in one. We think any tool that can take the pain out of decorating is worth buying! But which steamer will you choose?
