About this deal

Anyway, my experince is that on the: around 60sec with a normal telescope or 120sec with tele you should be fine 🙂 We gota Vixen Polarie to review, and after a few tests, I took a fairly successful photo of the Large Magellanic Cloud. Here it is, and this is the story of how I did it.

Instead of relying on the adjustable head of a tripod to set the correct elevation and azimuth of the mount, the adjustable wedge makes this a simple task. Multi-function switch Switching down to a 50mm lens, we found that 60-second exposure shots gave pinpoint stars, but 120-second exposures were beyond our reach. However, with our 150mm lens weighing in at 1.7kg, we discovered that we had lost 32 of the 90 images we captured due to movement in the exposure, despite it being a very still night.Platform needed to be portable, i.e. fit in a bag or small case that could easily be carried on an aircraft and stowed in the overhead. Refine the polar alignment by centering Polaris (or σ-Octans) in the field of view of the Polar Sight Hole I suspect it will also limit the overall exposure time or the stars will have moved enough relative to the foreground to cause either star trails or blurring of the foreground subject. Unfortunately, I did not have enough time with the Polarie to explore this setting fully, but think it could be a very interesting mode if you have a fast enough camera lens and some interesting foreground material. Lights on the mount highlight which ‘Mode’ is selected (there is no LCD screen). This makes identification at night straightforward. The POLARIE U expands a wonderful world of star-scape photography and the pleasure of photography can be experienced by everyone.

With the Vixen Polarie, Vixen offers this neat little device that looks kind of like a camera. In fact, it’s actually about the same size and weight as an old Leica M9. It even has a flash shoe! Doesn’t look like much, does it? The camera mount is attached to the Polarie U by two thumbscrews so this can be fully detached (a carry-over feature from Vixen’s previous model), which allows the ball head and camera to be attached easily. As an accessory, Vixen (and other third parties) sell a polar scope with a reticule. This reticule is a screen you can look through that shows where the alignment stars should be. You install the scope through the centre of the Polarie, then peer though it to align on Sigma Octantis. In the best conditions, this is a very accurate way of aligning the Polarie. The problem is that finding Sigma Octantis in a polar scope is famously difficult. It’s even harder in a light polluted area.Offering almost twice as much payload as its ‘little brother’, the Sky-Watcher Star Adventurer Mini, this Pro version also ramps up the battery life by using four AA batteries that last for 72 hours. That’s plenty of time for a field trip into remote areas while also being simple enough to swap out mid-shoot. Straight out of the box, the payload capacity is a modest 2.5kg, which is more than adequate for a DSLR camera and a standard lens.

If you look closely, you’ll see the stars in the centre of the field are nice and round. However, in the corners they have been elongated away from the centre. This is a problem of the lens, and not the Polarie. It's been a year, and I still continue to be impressed by the Polarie. I find that because of its simplicity I manage to make more opportunities to image than I did before with my larger setups. Sometimes simple is best. Here's some of my results, you be the judge. At the first 10 min, it was ok, but after the batteries chilled down it was simply not enough to power it properly. The other thing to consider is that with gloves, particularly when using a ball head with a large base, the thumbscrews to fix the camera mount on the Polarie are difficult to operate.
