I can do five minutes.” She would be relieved. Making a fuss and tantruming would be reinforced. Learning that it was safe to jump into her father’s arms would never happen. Her fear of being dropped, allowed to flounder in the pool, would remain intact. Medication should not be relied upon with the idea that it will ‘cure’ OCD. It won’t. It provides a different benefit. Taking control, however, making the delay intentional, feels good. You’re surprised to learn that even such a small step as waiting to wash your hands for a minute gives you a sense of control. The OCD hoarder does not focus on treasure. Far from it. In fact, often there is no focus at all other than the steady refusal to discard worthless items. As a result, these folks tend to accumulate massive amounts of clutter.

Before doing that, however, I want to briefly mention two things that many people find helpful to use when battling OCD. The first of these is to find an experienced therapist to help guide you through the process. Generally people don’t recover with self-help alone, one reason for this is that no matter how good the self-help material is, they are only helpful if the reader correctly interprets what they read. Self-help materials can also never replace the support and motivation given by a good therapist. But the more you understand OCD, the more you can make better use of your therapy once it starts.

This book is written by people who know their shit and I highly recommend this book to anyone who suffers with OCD or is interested in OCD or wants to understand what someone they love is going through. Some of what's in this book I already knew from my time at CBT but some of it gave me that lightbulb moment of 😮 oooh yeaaaahhh, to explain some of my behaviours. It also made me feel a little less... mad.

But choose wisely, the internet and social media is full of OCD material which isn’t always helpful or accurate. The same with OCD books, in recent years we have seen a deluge of OCD titles hit the shelves, some are interesting but not always helpful. Highly recommended not only for patients but also for practitioners looking for material to use in their practices.
