About this deal

While the plot concluded nicely, the characters had finally found their stride, and I was really enjoying the relationships starting to flourish. Although some things stay behind the magician's curtain, the system of magic is well developed and explained overall. Magari non perfetto, magari avrà forse un seguito (non lo so), però mi è piaciuto e, soprattutto, mi ha stupito nei suoi sviluppi. Though I wouldn't say that it was ever shocking or suspenseful, the fast pace made it a quick and engaging read. The fantastical elements really reminded me why I, as a reader, enjoy books so much in the first place.

Ink Blood Sister Scribe: A spellbinding, edge-of your seat

Esther and Pearl had spent the past winter as two of just thirty others holding down the small South Pole station, but November had ushered in the summer season and over the past few days, small roaring cargo planes had disgorged nearly a hundred new people into the station’s hallways. As soon as she released him, he bounced to his feet, brushing himself off and saying, “Not cool, dude, not cool! She’d lived in Minneapolis for the year before she’d come here to the Antarctic, and her friends there had reacted with honest horror when she’d told them she’d accepted a job at the Pole station as an electrician for the winter season.

Magic is real and spells are cast from books, spells that are written with the blood and life of Scribes.

Emma Törzs's debut novel, Ink Blood Sister Scribe, is the kind of book that reminds me why I love the fantasy genre. It was eight o’clock in the evening and not discernibly darker than it had been at eight o’clock that morning.

She cupped her hands around the coyote's beautiful face and stared into those beautiful eyes, which stared right back, the pale green of the last changing leaf. I did enjoy reading this but I felt I wanted more from it in terms of depth and maybe a little less that was obvious.

Her older sister Esther has vanished to the wind and now wanders around the world, never staying in one place for very long. Nicholas similarly has paid the cost of magic, though creating spells has its honour and sense of purpose, using blood to create magical spells takes a significant toll on one’s health, meaning the more Nicholas creates the more he deteriorates. But when Esther makes a grave mistake, the sisters are thrown into a fight for their lives, against an evil that they can't seem to identify. With decadently rich prose and an intriguing mix of magic and mystery, Emma Törzs’ Ink Blood Sister Scribe explores loyalty, sisterhood, betrayal and obsession —in this gorgeously interwoven tale about two estranged sisters, their family’s magical book collection and the shady organisation willing to do anything to possess them. When the sisters father dies they must come together to protect the magical books and they uncover deadly secrets that will change their lives forever.

A last smudge of vivid red was slowly fading into the paper and Abe himself was mushroom-white and oddly shriveled.A few minutes later she had J-Dog on the floor in a headlock, one of his arms trapped in her hold, the other swatting at her face, his long legs kicking ineffectually at the tiled floor as onlookers hooted and cheered. We follow Joanna and Esther, two estranged half-sisters who must protect their family’s collection of magical books as their ancestors for generations have done. An anticipation of missing, like her emotions hadn’t yet caught up to the idea that this time was different, this time she was staying.
