About this deal

EO markets the Mini Pro 2 as the smallest smart electric vehicle charger, and we can see why. At just 175mm x 125mm x 125mm, a sheet of A5 paper covers it up! ntegrating electric vehicle (EV) chargers with solar panels within home settings is an excellent way to promote green energy usage, and it is even more advantageous when the chargers can be synchronised with specialised energy tariffs. This section will discuss the importance of energy tariff integration for solar-compatible EV chargers and will provide an example of a smart charging solution. The footprint is so small the EO Mini Pro 2 is perfect for installation on a post, like in this installation below (credit: @EvPoints): If your installation is for a workplace or commercial entity then being able to be flexible and make changes can be vital. This modular option offers a charging solution for your business to make the management of your electric vehicle fleet as easy as possible.

The Zappi v2.1 is the best EV charger for solar panels and renewables, with feeds for these and special charge modes for balancing. Charger Comparisons Zappi vs OhmeThe EO Mini Pro 2 is available tethered or untethered. Our review unit is untethered, and I prefer the clean, tidy installation it offers. The tethered unit costs around 25% more but is more convenient. EO recommends the cable be stored on a wool hook when not in use (sold separately). EO Smart Home app

If you don’t like the EO Smart Home app, you can use your vehicle manufacturer app instead if it has one, turning the EO into a charge point you just plug into. The EO Mini Pro 2 doesn’t have a physical control panel. Everything is controlled via the EO Smart Home app, available on iPhone and Android. Installation takes around four hours, providing the existing RCD and electrical connections are robust enough to accommodate the charger. Some EV chargers offer energy management systems that allow you to charge your vehicle using only the green energy generated by your solar panels, or a mix of green and grid energy. For example, Wallbox provides Eco-Smart solar EV charging as a feature in their Pulsar Max and Copper SB models. This capability lets you choose between fully green or mixed charging modes, depending on your energy production and consumption at home. Sadly, there’s no solar charging integration or colour choice. What’s more, the Ohme Home Pro is only offered on a tethered basis, and the open cabling means it looks a bit messy. While the Ohme Home requires an additional charge for a Garo earthing device, the Home Pro gets built-in grounding technology. The Ohme Home Pro isn’t as versatile as others, but its price (alongside that screen) makes it a worthy contender for those car brands that are supported. The Zappi’s Eco modes mean the charger draws energy from your solar device, instead of energy from the Grid—provided the house isn’t using that energy, of course. The sophisticated software has been designed to enable customers to prioritise whether excess solar energy storage should go to the car, a battery or, should you have one, a hot water tank. Upgrades from the first iteration of the Zappi now enable customers to benefit from off-peak, or ‘agile’ tariffs, both of which help keep energy bills as low as possible. One service offering tariff integration is Intelligent Octopus, which delivers green electric vehicle charging through its next-generation platform. By providing six hours of cheap, green energy during off-peak hours (11.30 pm to 5.30 am) at a rate of 10p per kWh, users can charge their EVs more sustainably and affordably. The Intelligent Octopus app lets users set their charging preferences, so they are always in control of their energy usage. The Hypervolt Home 3 Pro has one of the best apps, a premium design and voice control, as well as epic reliability and performance.

Charging schedule management is a crucial feature for users who want to maximise their solar energy usage and minimise costs associated with charging their electric vehicles. With charging schedule management features, users can set up customised charging schedules that prioritise solar energy in peak generation periods. For example, the Hypervolt Home 2.0 and Wallbox Pulsar Plus offer smart scheduling options that allow users to automate their charging, ensuring the highest possible use of solar energy. It's easy to install - no need for earth rods (built-in PME, power install options available through the rear of the enclosure or at the base) If the EO Mini Pro is installed with a Garo earthing device then no rod is needed, but if you don’t use a Garo, you should still use an earth rod. You can install the EO Mini Pro inside a garage for example and that way it would use the house earthing and not need a separate device. But this would mean you could only charge indoors and would have to put the electric vehicle in the garage every time, doing it outside with this setup is dangerous. The optional solar charging feature is worth having if you have solar panels because it lets you charge your EV exclusively with solar power. With a small solar panel setup, you should be able to draw around 3.6kW or up to 7kW with a larger solar installation. Session details are stored in the cloud, letting you view charging sessions at all times whether the vehicle is plugged in or not. Having looked at the EO Mini Pro, for a 16A charging station they advise a 20A rated supply and for a 32A charging station, a 40A supply. Your electrics may need upgrading, it all depends on how much power they draw. If you don’t have the patience then dial up the charging capacity of the Mini Pro 3 to 22kW. Always connected. Within the EO Mini Pro, there are different lights that indicate any faults that have been detected. If there is no earth connection, then two short red flashes will appear and if the natural and live conductors are revered, four short red flashes will show. All electricians will have their own equipment for testing, but it’s a helpful feature from EO.

The EO EV Charger allows for smart charging which means you can automatically take advantage of energy prices when they are at their cheapest. This can be achieved by syncing to provider apps such as the Octopus Go app. The Indra Smart PRO has the excellent Kaluza app, solar integration, and a BOOST button that overrides any schedules and charge settings for max power. To supply the cable you have to drill under and through the EO Mini enclosure, roughly a 20-25mm hole. There is an EO charging output for load management and solar array for solar charging thanks to the CT connections.

The best home EV chargers you can buy in 2023

The EO mini is available in both tethered option and untethered where you can use the cable from your car. The tethered option comes with a 5m long cable for charging. The circuit board inside the EO Mini Pro has a PCB (Printed Circuit Board) that acts as the computer with a separate control board for power control. Both are capable of receiving firmware updates automatically. EO Mini Pro 2 design The EO Mini Pro 2 is a tiny, inconspicuous ‘smart’ home charger available tethered or untethered, charging at speeds up to 7.2kW (single-phase). One workaround with the need for a Garo earthing device is to have the charger installed in a garage and only charge indoors. This way, the EO Mini Pro 2 will use the house earthing and not need a separate earthing device. However, you will only be able to charge indoors – charging outside with this setup is dangerous. Outdated firmware is the main cause of error codes in the EO app. The EO Mini Pro 2 has over-the-air updates with automatic updates, so you get no control over updates. Customer support
