There are a lot of characters in this story, but the main characters are Popsicle and Cessie. Popsicle is a 65-year-old man; he has a son called Arthur; he has a granddaughter too. His granddaughter’s name is Cessie. Cessie is 11 years old; she is an intelligent and kind girl. However, the author should write Cessie as 17 or 18 years old; at 11 years old, she can’t protect Popsicle and help him remember his past in Shangri - La. But the author is just trying to make the readers more interested because they might be the same age. Cessie did not know that she had a grandfather till one day, Popsicle went to Cessie and told her that he was her grandfather; he couldn’t remember anything except his family. Cessie promised to help Popsicle remember his past. The last bit of the book also in France also felt a step too far with a crew of elderly pensioners all sailing a boat to France, but it was charming and engaging. But if we had to have a musical version, wouldn't it have been a good idea to hire a couple of musical stars?! Okay, at a push Bobby Van passes muster, and thank God that he's meant to be that annoying, because after five minutes the idea of him being lost in a snowdrift seemed eminently satisfying. But as for the rest - George Kennedy, Peter Finch, Sally Kellermann, John Gielgud, Olivia Hussey - well we aren't going to see them in a revival of "42nd Street" now are we? My favourite definitely has to be Kellermann and Hussey thumping around a library, the former looking bored, the latter very pregnant, singing what seems to be a 70s New Age version of the "Green Acres" theme. The story is mainly about 4 characters - Cessie ( a 12-year-old girl), her dad-Arthur, her mom and her grandfather, Popsicle. One fine day, Popsicle turns out of nowhere and tells that family that he is Arthur's father who had separated from him 50 years ago. The family is quite taken by surprise and is curious to know more but unfortunately, Popsicle remembers very little from his past. While the mother and daughter accept him and try to make all efforts to make him feel at home, the father is very reluctant and finds it very hard to accept Popsicle into his life. The Observer switches repeatedly between Franz and Cody's forms as it tells Fena that she is the "Maiden of Choosing" who must choose between letting the world continue as it is, or resetting it with only herself and a few other "pure souls". Yukimaru meets with her in Eden one last time before she disappears, swearing to find her again. Suddenly, Yukimaru wakes up on a beach, where an amnesiac Fena is standing in the water where her hair has become long and dark. The Goblin Knights then appear with their ship and whatever treasure they could carry. The crew decide to take Fena on a journey to retrace her steps and hopefully restore her memories. Kei receives the legendary sword from Shitan, Fena reunites with Salman, Otto, and Angie, walks by Charlotte, Mary, and Hannah, and sees two kids resembling Abel and Helena. While they are alone, Yukimaru confesses his love for Fena. Which suddenly triggering some of her lost memories is partially return indicating Yukimaru is the only one who can restore her memories. Something I really like about Morpurgo’s work is that he takes unknown characters and/or situations and puts them into big historical events. There were so many boats on D-Day that a lot are often forgotten about, and he takes one of these “forgotten” (read: fictionalised, in this instance (at least, I think)) boats and makes them real and remembered.
