We were sad of the loss of Maureen Brunt, one of our Dear Street Pastors, who served both Herne Bay and Canterbury. She will be remembered fondly. After completing the stain removal stage of the project, crews gave the streets a deep clean with the sweeper to buff away any residue and give all surfaces a good polish. The year also saw the Channel Tunnel officially open, Tony Blair become Labour leader and Lidl open its first stores in Britain.Today Canterbury still welcomes visitors from all four corners of the globe and has, with its many ancient buildings, shops, bars and restaurants, retained both an old world charm and a cosmopolitan vitality. A small and compact city, the centre is closed to traffic during the daytime so that streets and attractions may more easily and safely be accessed by walking trails or from April to October with a guided tour. Today, the mound is something of a landmark for the city, and offers superb views over the surrounding historic homes and sections of the old city walls. The gardens were added later, around 1790, and are a delight to stroll through, especially during springtime when the first blooms appear. We are proud to be one of the strategic partners of the Canterbury Safer Streets Project alongside our Christ Church Students’ Union - helping to make the city a safer place for not only our students and staff but all local residents and visitors of Canterbury. We take reports of spiking very seriously and provide support for any students who have witnessed or experienced spiking

Canterbury’s corner of the county of Kent (the “Garden of England”) is rich in charming villages and glorious countryside, which is easy to explore by car, bicycle or public transport. Take a leisurely stroll in the nearby coastal towns of Herne Bay with its splendid seafront gardens and Whitstable with its working harbour and colourful streets of fishermen’s cottages. If you are a resident in Canterbury where permits are required, you can apply for a residents parking permit.Other fun things to do include participating in the Westgate's 'escape room' attraction, or grabbing a bite of lunch or dinner in the restaurant set up in the former jail. Each itinerary would take approximately 1 day to complete, but can be adapted to fit a half day visit if necessary. One: the past is history As part of the funding awarded by the Chewing Gum Task Force, signs were also installed to encourage people to put their chewing gum in the bin rather than throwing it on the floor in a bid to prevent it from being dropped in the first place. There are many different substances that can be used to spike from alcohols to a range of drugs. Whilst there are some indications that a drink may have been spiked, often this is not the case. If in doubt talk to the bar staff at the venue; however, some tell-tale signs may include: The University has been working to secure funding alongside the Canterbury Safety Partnership as a part of the Government’s Safer Streets 4 funding. The Partnership were able to acquire funding towards a range of safety projects for the city between 2022 – 2024.

And, of course, there's the view. Standing more than 60 feet high, the battlements of the Westgate offer spectacular panoramic views across the historic city and its old medieval center, as well as the surrounding parks and gardens adjacent to the River Stour. Last October (2022) we trialled a new shift pattern for the patrols. Meeting at an earlier time of 8.30pm and going out on patrol by around 9pm till 2am. It has seen an increase in encounters and Faith chats, but we will review it as the warmer weather comes around the corner. Shown above is an extremely useful, interactive Canterbury map, showing the location of the city situated in the county of Kent in south-eastern England, United Kingdom. It's marketed as one of the UK's largest collections of Freemason-related artifacts and research materials. Highlights include regalia and paintings, as well as rare glassware and porcelain associated with the Masons. A variety of historical documents are also on display, supported by interesting audiovisual displays that provide a look at the history of the group. This was the year Paul Scally began his long reign as chairman of Gillingham FC, overseeing an upgrade of Priestfield Stadium in the second half of the decade. Spiking’ is when someone puts alcohol or drugs into another person’s drink or their body without their knowledge and/or consent.Spiking is a serious criminal offence carrying a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison in England and Wales. While about half of the original city walls have been lost to war and ruin, a number of sections have been faithfully restored, and in places traces of the original Roman walls can still be seen. Those sections that do remain, including the Westgate tower, provide a sense of just how impressive these fortifications once would have been. By the end of the year, a whopping 1% of the UK population (600,000 people) had access to the internet.

Canterbury is very much a typical British city with medieval history around every corner, but this also means its not the easiest city to drive around. Also featured on this Canterbury map are the nearby towns, villages and areas of Pean Hill, Blean, Broad Oak, Sturry, Chartham, Westbere, Thanington, Rough Common and Bridge, you can also see the Canterbury Golf Club. And while people remember the 90s as the decade of Blur and Oasis, let's not forget Stars, by Simply Red, was the best-selling album in both 1991 and 1992.

Suggested Itineraries for days out in Canterbury

St Augustine was sent by the Pope in 597 AD to re-establish Christianity in southern England and came to Canterbury. Ruins of the monastery built by Augustine still remain and he founded the first cathedral in England where the present magnificent building now stands. Completely refurbished and reopened in 2012 in what's become the city's cultural hub - the Marlowe Theatre is also located in the vicinity - the building itself is something of a tourist attraction, designed in an attractive Tudor-revival style and constructed in the late 19th century.
