The pandemic had actually played to Woolf and Sunshine’s favour. “It gave us extra time without being under pressure to launch. We had time to find contracts with retailers and locate premises and had the most spare time ever as we couldn’t socialise or go out! We also couldn’t spend much, so we could survive for a year on less while we worked on the brand.” Don’t spend a penny until you have written your mission down. A business plan is an evolving document. Change it, add new things, and scribble out others. Your business is more than the idea, it’s the people actioning it. Understand each other. When creating the gummy treats, top of their list of must-haves was the right texture and chew. “We didn’t like the other sweets we tried and thought we could do better in terms of taste and texture. We hated the feeling of the sweets getting caught in our teeth. Of [your teeth] being dirty after eating them” says Woolf. Peaches & Cream: Glucose syrup, Sugar, Water, Fruit pulp (10%), (apple, antioxidant: ascorbic acid, acidifier: citric acid), Gelling agent (pectin), Glazing agent (vegetable oil: coconut and carnauba wax), Natural flavours and Natural colouring (betacarotene) The actual process requires several stages — and some patience. After boiling up the water and adding sugar, glucose syrup and pectin (used instead of gelatine) the flavour, colour and citric acid is added. This is poured into moulds, left to cool then the little sugary people are popped out, drenched in snow sugar (a non--melting icing sugar) to form their shell, then left to chill in in a temperature-controlled environment for ten days which gives them the right texture and finish. So why vegan? “First and foremost, I wanted my mates who don’t eat gelatine to be able to eat what I made. And you don’t need to eat beef gelatine when eating sweets.”While we avidly munch on our Juicy Peach Tasty Mates (Oh so juicy!), our eye is caught by a detail: the candy we’re eating is vegan! But why vegan candy?, we ask Joe. Unlike other Jewish media, we do not charge for content. That won’t change. Because we are free, we rely on advertising to cover our costs. This vital lifeline, which has dropped in recent years, has fallen further due to coronavirus. The cute sweets — which resemble steam-roller-flattened jelly babies — currently come in a range of four flavours — pear crumble, salted caramel, very berry and peaches and cream. Each is branded to represent a different personality trait that the founders thought you may find in a crowd of friends, especially in the Generation Z age group. It’s taken 2 years; growing self-awareness; a bag full of wins and a larger bag of losses, and Tasty Mates is almost here. You may have forgotten to socialise throughout all this, but Tasty Mates are friends for life. There’s no shortage of oys in the world but Jewish News takes every opportunity to celebrate the joys too, through projects like Night of Heroes, 40 Under 40 and other compelling countdowns that make the community kvell with pride.

When I say working at Tasty Mates has kept me on my toes, I mean literally… Little did I know I would be actually helping to make the sweets… YES making them 🤯! This is what I mean by no two days are the same, some mornings will be spent in production getting the ingredients ready, helping to spread the sweets into the moulds or demoulding and coating the scrumptious sweets in snow sugar! I can now proudly say I am a professional sweet maker! Love it. I’ve been here since last September and have been coming twice a week. I use the club to meet people, work, have lunch. I love the food and meting people. It’s a really effective way of networking.’ Joe’s journey through hell and high water must have given him lots of wisdom, and we ask him to share some of it with other entrepreneurs. Big time. There’s nothing better than having a co-founder with whom to share both miseries and joys. If not a co-founder, it would be good to at least have a mentor or someone to go through that emotional journey with you.’ says Joe. Our aim is to promote meaningful moments with mates and the importance of being there for your friends and catching up with your mates, so a lot of our social media is around that. We’ve done that on a small scale, and one thing we’ll be doing next is putting this in practice on a much bigger scale. We want to be the driving force in food and drink of promoting Meaningful Moments with Mates,’ says Joe.
